The Fracture

In the recent past, a tidal wave of magic devastated the land. Many creatures that came in contact with it perished, and survivors were physically and magically changed. The surge of energy fueled the redevelopment of ecosystems, with magically adapted plants and animals springing up even within the first year. Due to this, much of the world is unrecognizable, and must be rediscovered.

The surge was channeled through magical phenomena known as ley lines. Various major ley lines exist throughout the world, some useful, some dangerous. The most notorious of which occur in territory nestled between the southern mountains and the coast. Two magical storms endlessly spiral about their cores in this deadly land.

Lore

Flux

aka Soul, Essence, Core

Flux is the essence of an individual. It is their magical potential, their life-force, their soul.

In the past, most creatures had roughly 1 Flux. After the Fracture, creatures began to accumulate Flux from the volatile ley energy present. Flux influences of how powerful a creature is. It bolsters their strength, allows them to more effectively wield magic, and helps them survive more severe wounds. Flux is normally not visible, and most commonly manifests through use of powers. Its appearance is unique to each individual.

Powers

Any creature bearing enough Flux can pull magic from their surroundings to manifest powers. The amount of magic a creature can use before running out of energy is determined by Flux.

Powers are classified by type, and individuals typically are only able to perform powers within one class. A character is born with natural access to a single primary power tree, with additional power trees becoming available through other means.

The primary power classes are:
Source - Magic of the body
Astral - Magic of the mind
Planar - Magic of the world

Powers

Factions

Factions are few, but prominent in the New World. When large groups of survivors gather under a common ideal, they are able to create order from the turmoil of the developing world, shaping it to their liking.

Factions traditionally choose to settle around ley lines, as they have since before the Fracture. Factions use ley lines to their advantage to bond their members, to develop unique magic, and to establish sanctuaries from the unceasing dangers of the Post Fracture world.

Warped

aka Hunters, Monsters

The deadly wave of the Fracture has passed, but the world is now filled with monsters known as Warped. Warped creatures come in various forms, none of the quite recognizable as any species from the Old World. Their danger comes from their violent nature, as they are known to hunt down other creatures with unnatural desperation.

Volatile magic infects these creatures Flux, fundamentally changing them. This volatility can be detected by Auguring, but Warped are often recognizable by their demeanor first and foremost.

Survivors

Some saw their world disappear as they lived through the Fracture, others were born into this New World. These few survivors are driven together by their desire for safety and their common enemy of the Warped. These commonalities have broken down barriers between species, even predator and prey. It is widely accepted that survivors are obligated help others in peril, even strangers, in the Wilds.

Most characters join a faction, contributing to its ideal while receiving relative safety and help from fellows. Groups of survivors frequently embark on expeditions, looking for others in need or help, learning more about the New World, and making developments which are beneficial to their faction.

Character Creation

The World

A massive mountain range breaks up the western horizon. To the north, the remnants of a dense metropolis decay. Waves crash down on a sprawling eastern coast, interrupted by golden fields which surround a tree so massive it can be seen from miles away. In the south, two magical storms endlessly spiral. In the sky, two moons now hang, and vivid ley lines drift above the clouds.

Little is known of the vast expanses of untamed land in the surrounding region and beyond. The Fracture transformed everything. Plants, landscape, even weather. The threats of each territory must be rediscovered and documented if survivors ever want to travel freely.

For now, the Wilds remain perilous and ruled by countless warped. Survivors live knowing that any journey could be their last.
