Joining has now ended, thank you!
The world reels before you as you step out of the safety of the Hollow Hill. Three years. It has been three years since the Fracture, and you are still just barely scraping by. Every meal is a battle. Every night without rest.
Though the Hollow Hill shelters you from the elements, it is hardly safe. Still, it's better to hide here than to strand yourself outdoors. At least here, there are others like you. Survivors, though they come from many different places, guard the halls and cover your tail while you sleep. Coyotes and boars curl among the soft shreds of mankind, cats and rabbits work together without fear, and rats irreverently chew through the abandoned walls of the structure, seeing no great consequence for their actions. It's a strange place you find yourself in. For now, you call it home.
A home with no food stored within it. A home with no door to keep the wind at bay. A home that lets warped crawl into it as easily as they please, for otherwise it would block everyone's entry. It is not a comfortable home by any means.
In spite of the fear and famine that compose your daily routine, you find yourself without purpose. This is it, you suppose. You will stay at the Hollow Hill, barely staying alive until finally, you stop. Be it at the teeth of the Warped or the claws of fate, you are going to die here.
There's nothing left to do but wait for that day.
Joining will be officially opened via an Announcement in the discord. Once we're open, you can submit a character for approval. As soon as we approve your character, you're legally allowed to roleplay with other approved characters and create solo works with NPCs.
For this opening, we will be INVITE ONLY. Current chat members can invite up to two friends using the discord invite link. This link won't be posted publicly so as to avoid the attention of bots and to keep things small and manageable for our first event. Public openings are a possibility in the future. If you don't have a friend in chat, but have been keeping an eye on the website, send a DM to Zynonia on deviantart for an invite.
How to Join
First, get into the discord. This is the most important part, as critical updates to joining may appear in the discord before they appear on the website. Once you're in, take a look around, settle in, and prepare yourself for the most exciting page of the website.
This joining places characters 3 years after the Fracture. Some may have come from before the fracture, while others were born into the apocalyptic landscape. Those who were born into the new world may not have directly experienced the factions of old, but their experiences remain shaped by it as traditions are passed down by the last generation.
Characters can come from almost any origin, and can be almost any age.
Characters who are part of this joining have spent at least some time sheltering in the Hollow Hill, which is located in center of the Scarlands. In their time spent haunting the Hollow Hill, they have learned much about the Region and the Warped that inhabit it. Those who sheltered here have also found a number of abandoned artifacts to study, granting them greater insight into mankind's accomplishments.
Skill Bonuses:
+1 Knowledge Warped
+1 Knowledge Artifacts
+1 Navigate
Banes:
All characters in this opening will start as Standard profession, due to the aimless nature of the Hollow Hill. This will severely hamper their combat capabilities.
Free Starting Item:
All characters in this joining may start with 1 free item/accessory. This item will start with 1d3 fragility, and must be mundane (non-magical). Fragility is health meter that exists for damaged, corroded, or poorly made items. Once you hit 0 fragility, the item will be damaged beyond repair. Each item will provide a little bonus to help you survive, but be careful! Every time you use it, you risk damaging it.
Coyote outfits count as 1 item, no matter how many pieces there are in the assembly. Clothing can be damaged during combat and travel, not during normal wear around the Hollow Hill.
In the story, these items are something your character has come across in their travels or held onto for a long time. They may have found it in the Hollow Hill, or they may have had since Pre-Fracture times. Up to you!
Origin: Hollow Hill Survivor
Flux Type: Regular
Starting Flux: 5
Profession: Standard
Age Guidance: We are still developing the lore on this! But for now, here is a rough idea of how aging works in this setting.
PreFracture, animals aged at greatly varying rates. Some would take several years to mature, while some may have grown up in a matter of months. Most animals lived shorter lives than those of mankind, typically dying before their 20th year. Rats lived notably longer lifespans in this world, capable of making it to 10-20 years old.
PostFracture, all animals appear to mature at roughly the same rate.
Year 1: Childhood. They are notably smaller, and often lack the Post-Fracture accents their species has evolved(horns, tusks, manes)
Year 2-3: Adolescence. Typically, a character reaches their full height by this point. Tusks, horns, and other post-fracture evolutions begin to grow in, often making for awkward inbetween-stages until they're done.
Year 3-4: Adulthood. Characters who reach this point are fully grown.
Nobody is sure how long they will live with all of these new mutations. Individuals who were already old or greying by the time the Fracture hit have found themselves feeling healthier and more youthful than before, but have retained their older appearance. Overall, it seems like one could hope to live longer these days. That is...if they can dodge the storms, monsters, and barren wastes of the lands
For this joining, characters can be any age that is self sufficient. No kittens, no hoglets! You need to be able to walk on your own and eat normal food for this joining.
Once Chapter 1 progressed from the prologue, joining will be over, and no new characters will be accepted. Additionally, all of the pre-event prompts will close when the event starts. To get the special rewards associated with each prompt, submit them before the start of the first event.
Currently, we are looking at July 2023 for the start of the first event. This date may change depending on admin readiness.
Update: Chapter 1 has begun!
Several individuals have become particularly well known in the Hollow Hill thanks to how long they have been here, and how often they can be found sheltering within. These characters are NPCs who can be used by any player accepted in the joining. They may also appear in the Hollow Hill discord channel as admins use them to spice up public roleplays. Unless your character has just arrived, they will most likely recognize these faces.
Kraft is well known for being the local medic. He swears he has patched together just about everyone at some point. A particularly well educated feline, he can speak both basic Omnivore and Herbivore. He's not fluent just yet, but he knows enough to figure out where you're hurt and let you know how he will help. It's a skill he picked up before the Fracture. He says he was always meeting new faces on their temporary stays in his peoples' household.
Bernese is everything you would expect from a Coyote. Big, powerful, quiet, and...sad? Sometime after the Fracture they lost an item very dear to them, and still seems torn up about it. Anyone who takes the time to befriend this bashful Coyote will get regular requests to keep an eye out for it when they leave the Hill.
They can often be seen engaging in quiet conversation with Krunsch, who has been helping maintain their clothes for the past year. If the Fracture did one good thing, Bernese will say, it's grant them dexterity. They are excited to make attire of their own design, and take the time to search ruins they encounter for textiles.
Krunsch is a city rat through and through. She saw enough battles before the Fracture to know that the best way to survive is to stay out of the way. There are more than a few stories of her bailing on her party in the wastes, but hey, a rats gotta look out for herself right? They usually make it back to the Hill anyhow, and if they don't, well, all the better Krunsch wasn't there to fall with them. Despite her unrepentant cowardice, she can be a useful ally to have around. She has made a good business of stitching up damaged keepsakes in exchange for free food and artifacts.
Brongo is a rabbit of many opinions. He has more opinions about carnivores than anything else, often directly voicing his concerns over their diet. He's begun to hold his tongue around a few of them, having learned over time that they aren't that bad, but he's too paranoid to trust newer fangs in the Hill. If you can get him to talk, you'll discover that behind all that bluster and gruff, he's a scholar deeply invested in researching the local warped.
Jonsie was once a well respected member of the Glory Hunters, having proven herself a skilled hunter alongside the boars. Not only that, but she could pursue all kinds of predators they couldn't, like snakes. She's a major show off, often choosing to bring whole kills back to the Hollow Hill before she butchers them. That way, everyone can clearly see what it is she killed today. Though her attitude can be grating at times, she's an undeniable boon to the Hollow Hill. She hunts far more often than she needs to for food, and she's more than willing to share the food once she has the hide stripped off of it.
