Krokodil Streltsy Gunship
While the streltsy are primarily a ground combat force, their status as Varang's professional military have forced them to expand their capabilities. They cannot afford to rely on whatever assets the local prince has at his disposal, and most of the nobility prefer tanks, infantry, or mechanized chassis to maintaining aerial units. Thus, the streltsy developed this VTOL gunship, dubbed the Krokodil. This "flying tank" is the most well-armored aircraft on the planet, and carries a deadly weapon loadout to boot. Designed to hug terrain features and ambush isolated enemy squads or deliver close air support, the primary weapons are a pair of rocket pods for rapid saturation as it makes a flyby. To counter mech and vehicle opposition, it also mounts guided anti-armor missiles. The heavy-lift airframe was deemed so effective that mech transport variants were produced, removing weapons and drastically reducing armor in exchange for the ability to sling Size 1 mechs beneath the craft. Size 2 mechs can be carried, if awkwardly, by careful cooperation between two such transports.Â
Wingdrake Transport Glider
Little more than a broad lifting surface, a rocket-assisted jet engine, and a cramped cockpit, the Wingdrake is mostly piloted by daredevil Hunter candidates, rather than Handlers. Remote and semi-autonomous drone versions are still being tested. The Wingdrake flies very low, has no armor, and uses a Fulton system to snare its passengers off the ground. The passengers (a small mech, or up to a squad of hard-suited Hunters) must cling tightly to the line during transit. Dismounted passengers deploy via parachute. Mechs deploy via drop thrusters, assisted by a perilous stall maneuver if need be. Despite Wingdrakes being so vulnerable and prone to crashes, pilot and passenger mortality is surprisingly low. They may not get you where you were going, but they probably won't kill you.
