La Automotrice Leggera Turistica a nafta 444.3001 era una elaborazione della Aln772 presentata alla fiera di Milano del 1948.
Al tempo fece molta impressione per i suoi arredi modernissimi, progettati dall'architetto Renzo Zavanella. La rivista Domus gli dedicó un articolo (che mi sono procurato). Il sito scalaenne gli ha dedicato un articolo ricco di foto e filmati.
Avendo fatto la Aln772 ho così prodotto anche questa automotrice in scala N, facendone anche i bellissimi interni.
La conversione in scala Z peró non poteva essere solo una riscalatura, in quanto i montanti del vistadome erano troppo sottili.
Ho allora usato la tecnica di stampare anche i vetri del vistadome insieme alla scocca (3).
In questa maniera la pittura della scocca si fa ad aerografo, tranne che per i montanti che vanno dipinti con un pennello sottile.
Il risultato è visibile nella prima prova di pittura (4).

This railcar was constructed as a modification of the Aln772 by placing a vistadome in the centre.
The railcar was presented at the Milano fair in 1948 and after that it connected in the week-ends Milano with the seaside resorts in Liguria as the fast luxury train, called "freccia Aurelia". Read about this on scalaenne.
I made this model in N scale (1), including also the very stylish interior designed by Renzo Zavanella (2). The Z reproduction is not only a rescaling of the N one. The thinness of the vistadome struts made impossible to print such delicate structure.
So I used the new technique of printing also the window panes together with the rest, in transparent SLA resin (3).
So the shell is airbrush painted, but for the vistadome which needs a very thin brushwork to paint the struts (3).

Inizialmente avevo motorizzato il modello utilizzando i miei carrelli motorizzati da 3m. Tuttavia non ero contento dell'altezza del modello sul piano del ferro. Poiché nei miei carrelli i motori sono con il loro asse orientato verticalmente, hanno bisogno di modelli di altezza standard. Questa automotrice è piuttosto bassa, questo significava che i carrelli non si adattavano bene.
Ho così riprogettato tutta la motorizzazione.
Ho colto l'occasione per progettare un impianto motore di bassissimo impatto visivo. in modo da poterlo utilizzare anche nell'ALtn444 dove gli interni sono riprodotti completamente
Inoltre ho scelto componenti a basso costo (motore Rokuhan a doppio albero a buon prezzo e ingranaggi cinesi M0.3 in plastica a 0,25 € a pezzo).
Telaio e carrelli sono stampati in PLA nero. I carrelli si inseriscono a scatto nel telaio ma possono ruotare e inclinarsi liberamente secondo necessità.
I carrelli sostengono il treno di ingranaggi grazie agli alberi in ottone che sono montati a pressione. Le sale montate con pignoni sono invece tenute in posizione dai consueti cuscinetti conici.
Ho anche incluso nella pancia del telaio quattro nicchie in cui possono essere bloccati i mattoni di zavorra rokuhan-shorty.
Le prese di corrente sono realizzate con fili di bronzo fosforoso che spazzolano il lato interno della flangia della ruota.
La scocca è verniciata utilizzando i colori FS castano, isabella, rosso segnale e alluminio prodotti da Puravest.

This railcar was put in service in 1940. Its production was resumed after the war, when the Italian rail network was slowly recovering from the destruction and needed autonomous passenger trains.
The ALn772 represents the second generation of railcars and thanks to its innovative design could be used till 1986.
The railcar was produced by OM and FIAT in 5 series that are very similar and they differ visually only for the shape of the connector placed on the front.
The railcar was also exported to other countries. the Polish state railways (PKP) bought three of these railcars and designated them as clas SD80.
As usual the shell and bogie sides are available on shapeways.
I had initially motorised the model using my 3m motorised bogies. However I was not happy about the height of the model over the track. Since in my bogies motors are with their axis oriented vertically, they need models of standard height. This railcar is rather low, this meant that the motors were not fitting well.
So back to the drawing board. I took the opportunity to design a motor plant of very low visual impact. so that I could also use it in the ALtn444 where the interior design is fully reproduced.
Also I chose very low cost components (good priced double shaft Rokuhan motor and Chinese M0.3 plastic gears at 0.25 € a piece).
Chassis and bogies are printed in black PLA. The bogies snap fit into the chassis but than can freely rotate and pitch as required.
The bogies hold the gear train thanks to brass shafts which are press fit. The geared wheelsets are instead held in position by the usual conical bearings.
I have also included in the belly of the chassis four niches in which rokuhan-shorty ballast bricks can be jammed in.
Current pick-ups are implemented with phospur-bronze wires brushising the inner side of the wheel flange.
The shell is painted using the prototypical castano, isabella, rosso segnale and aluminium from Puravest.

La scocca di partenza è il modello disponibile su shapeways in Frosted Ultra Detail (FUD) e Frosted Extreme Detail (FXD). Per una buona riuscita consiglio il FXD. La versione che ho convertito dalla N alla Z è la seconda serie
Per la verniciatura ho cominciato con la solita lavata in soluzione di acqua calda (la massima temperatura di un rubinetto), ammoniaca e sgrassatore. 15 minuti in una vasca ad utrasuoni o un paio d'ore sul termosifone.
Dopodiché una mano abbondante di primer fine Tamiya e una passata di carta vetro 600 con acqua.
Quindi dopo la prima passata di colore puravest grigio nebbia la scocca si presenta cosí
Ho poi applicato il verde magnolia con due mascherature, il rosso segnale sulle testate e finalmente l'argento sull'imperiale e sui cerchi dei fari. Il logo OM è stato dipinto in rosso al centro ed argento sulle lettere ed il contorno.

This railcar belongs to the second series of Italian railcars. The first series being all derived from the FIAT 'Littorine'.
This type of railcar was used in important trains including the 'Gondoliere' connecting Venice to Villach (Austria). Have a look at Scalaenne article on this railcar family.
The model is on Shapeways.
Paints used are the 'grigio nebbia', 'verde magnolia' and 'rosso segnale' form the Puravest line. The roof is painted in 'Aluminium' from Revell.
The motorised chassis uses two of my 'standard bogeys' with Märklin mini-club wheelsets.
Brass cog wheels have been soldered to the centre of the axles.

Le mitiche MAN delle FSE, erano in realtà state prodotte dalle officine della stanga di Padova. Quelle delle FSE sono state le ultime rimaste in azione dopo che quelle della Società Veneta e della ACT avevano spento i motori. Il modello in Z è una semplice riscalatura del modello in N.
La scocca di partenza è il modello disponibile su shapeways in Frosted Extreme Detail (FXD) ora chiamato Smoothest Detailed Plastics.
La scocca ha subito il solito trattamento di lavaggio in bagno ultrasonico di acqua, sgrassatore e ammoniaca. Poi una mano di stucco tamiya. Dopodicché la rimozione di tutte le linee passando la lama di un cacciavite da orologiaio e finalmente una seconda mano di stucco tamiya. Cosí si ottiene una superficie liscissima che può essere dipinta con colori acrilici/pluretanici. Ho usato il verde muschio e l'argento Revell e l'isabella e rosso segnale di puravest. Le linee gialle sono ottenute da un foglio decal che è stato prima dipinto con giallo segnale puravest e poi tagliato in sottilissime strisce.
I vetri sono di foglio di acetato da proiezioni tagliati al plotter ed incollati con il bondic.
La motorizzazione viene dalla motrice del treno PlusUP 485 che ho comprato per un prezzo incredibile. Le fiancate dei carrelli sono state molate per appiattirle e consentire l'inserzione nella scocca.

The legendary MAN of the FSE, had actually been produced by the Officine Meccaniche della Stanga (OMS) of Padua . OMS produced different versions of these railcars for several private railways in Italy. Those of the FSE were the last to remain in action after those of the Società Veneta (SV) and ACT had turned off the engines. The model in Z is a simple rescaling of my model in N.
The starting shell is the model available on shapeways in Frosted Extreme Detail (FXD) now called Smoothest Detailed Plastics.
The body underwent the usual washing treatment in an ultrasonic bath of water, degreaser and ammonia. Then a coat of tamiya putty. Then the removal of all the lines by passing the blade of a watchmaker's screwdriver and finally a second coat of tamiya putty. In this way a very smooth surface is obtained which can be painted with acrylic / polyurethane colors. I used the moss green and the silver Revell and the isabella and red signal of Puravest. The yellow lines are obtained from a decal sheet which was first painted with pure signal-yellow and then cut into very thin strips.
The glasses are made of acetate sheet for overhead projection, cut to the plotter and glued with bondic.
The engine comes from the engine of the PlusUP 485 train that I bought for an incredible price. The sides of the trolleys have been ground to flatten them and allow insertion into the body.

Il modello è disponibile su Shapeways solo in Z (per la N ci sono quelle di IRmodel).
La stampa grezza sembra molto liscia. Ma va comunque preparata per la pittura con il solito bagno di ammoniaca e sgrassatore.
Si dà poi una mano di turapori tamiya, e dopo aver rimosso con la punta del cacciavite le rugosità, si da una seconda mano.
La motorizzazione è la rokuhan shorty, che ho allungato con due prolunghe, una molto corta e l'altra lunga. Le due prolunghe si innestano fermamente sul telaio rokuhan ma è sempre meglio incollarle. Il telaio rokuhan va assottigliato in corrispondenza delle porte.
La verniciatura è a spuzzo con colori puravest. L'azzurro, l'ho ottenuto miscelando blu oltremare Revell con bianco panna puravest.
Le linee sono ottenute verniciando a spruzzo un foglio da decal, e poi tagliando una striscia sottile.
i vetri curvi in acetato, attaccati con resina indurente ai raggi ultavioletti sono perfettamente a filo.

The model is available on Shapeways only in Z (for N there are those of IRmodel).
The raw print looks very smooth. But it must be prepared for painting with the usual ammonia bath and degreaser.
A coat of tamiya fillers is then applied, and after removing the roughness with the tip of the screwdriver, a second coat is applied.
The motorization is the rokuhan shorty, which I lengthened with two extensions, one very short and the other long. The two extensions engage firmly on the rokuhan frame but it is always better to glue them. The rokuhan frame should be thinned at the doors.
The paint is spotted with puravest colors. The blue was obtained by mixing Revell ultramarine blue with pure cream white.
The lines are obtained by spray painting a decal sheet, and then cutting a thin strip.
The curved acetate glasses, attached with bondics are perfectly flush.

These iconic railcars were produced in 30 units by the company Aerfer-Imam and received a Breda engine derived from those used in the FS Aln442-448.
They are often referred as the FSE Breda. They had a very long career spanning from 1958 till 2017.
They dressed in this long period 4 different liveries:
1958-early 1970: white with a band at the height of the windows and a band in the lower part of green color. The fronts were painted, from the buffers down, in red.
early 1970 - early 1980s: mainly green wagon with a brown band at the base (initially separated by a yellow line, removed in the 1980s) with the lower part of the front in red.
early 1980s-mid1990s: ivory white with orange bands on the windows and at the base. Strangely, of all types of FSE railcars, this livery was only used on the Breda.
mid1990s -2017: mainly blue /gray top and bottom bands, a parchment beige band under the windows and a thin red line, separating top and middle bands, that rejoins the fronts creating a large area where the headlights are.. This livery is identical to that used for the railcars series 80 and series 120, in turn derived from the ALn 668 of the FS

The characteristic curvature of the heads is done simply by using round-tip tweezers.
For the motorization I intended to use my standard motorized bogies. Unfortunately the railcar is rather low and the vertically mounted motor could not fit under the shell ceiling.
So I designed a new motorised bogie with the motor mounted horizontally.
The housing of the bogie is made of two halves in which the motor and the gear train is clamped.
Two bogies are inserted in the chassis and thanks to two ortogonal sets of side shelves, the chassis can be made to sit isostatically.
As usual the bogie is completely autonomous and can run alone.
The bogie can also be used as idle. In fact as the railcar does not need a lot of thrust, I have mounted in the chassis one motorised bogie and a idle bogie.

La società fratelli Macchi di Varese, che aveva prodotto anche i migliori aerei da caccia italiani nella seconda guerra mondiale, nel dopoguerra tornò alla più tradizionale costruzione di autobus.
All'inizio degli anni Cinquanta, alla ricerca di nuovi mercati, la Macchi aveva acquisito dalla Uerdinger Maschinenfabrik la licenza per la produzione degli Schienenbus. Si pensava che queste piccole automotrici fossero adeguate per le tante piccole ferrovie private che gestivano le ferrovie complementari..
La Macchi riuscì a vendere, con il marchio Macchifer, 5 automotrici (e 5 rimorchi) alle Ferrovie Reggiane.
Ma quello che mi ha fatto riprodurre il modello è che , le Ferrovie del Sud-Est, cercando negli anni 50 soluzioni per la sostituzione completa della trazione a vapore sulla loro rete, acquistarono 2 automotrici, registrate come Ad21 e Ad22 e 2 rimorchi, registrati come Rp221 e Rp222. Il numero esiguo era dovuto alle esigenze di valutazione dell'esercizio sulla rete, prima di un ordine maggiore.
In realtà questi rimasero gli unici schienenbus operanti sulla rete, in quanto la FSE subito dopo acquistò molte automotrici Imam-Aerfer-Breda (Ad51-80).
le macchifer rimasero comunque in esercizio fino al 1985, principalmente sul collegamento Lecce-Maglie-Otranto.
Il loro peso relativamente contenuto permetteva di far trainare una coppia Ad-Rp da un set Breda da Lecce a Maglie per proseguire in autonomia da Maglie a Otranto.
Per realizzare il modello, avrei potuto usare uno schienenbus Märklin come base di partenza. Avrei però dovuto modificate le porte (il Macchifer aveva 4 sezioni su tutte le porte, con vetri nella parte alta e bassa) e chiuder grate ed altre cose.
Ma volevo fare un lavoro approfondito e cogliere l'occasione per realizzare un impianto motore a bassissimo impatto visivo.
Quindi ho scelto di progettare Macchifer in CAD. Il modello è composto da 4 parti:
la scocca
l'inserto d'arredo per interni
, 4. le due metà che compongono il telaio.
Questi sono in realtà identici e insieme consentono il montaggio di due micromotori ø 4 mm, ciascuno dei quali guida una sala montata attraverso un treno di ingranaggi M0.2.
La prima stampa presentava alcuni errori che sono stati corretti nella seconda.
Alla fine i due modelli sono quasi completati (decalcomanie ancora da realizzare).
Funzionano benissimo. Guarda i due video. Una delle due unità (vagone + rimorchio) funziona normalmente. Il secondo mostra il vagone con la scocca tolta. Notare quanto è basso il telaio. Sono piuttosto soddisfatto di questo.

The company Macchi of Varese, which had also been producing the best Italian fighter planes in WW2, after the war returned to the more traditional construction of buses.
In the early fifties, seeking new markets, Macchi had acquired from Uerdinger Maschinenfabrik the license to produce Schienenbus, which were deemed suitable for the many small private railways operating branch lines.
The company managed to sell, under the brand name Macchifer, 5 railcars ( and 5 trailers) to he Ferrovie Reggiane.
Most importantly, for me, Ferrovie del Sud-Est, which were seeking the complete replacement of steam traction on their network, bought 2 railcars registered as Ad21 and Ad22, and 2 trailers registered as Rp221 and Rp222 to evaluate them in service.
These were the only schienenbus operating on the network, as the FSE immediately after bought many Imam-Aerfer-Breda railcars (Ad51-80).
Nevertheless the Ad21-22 served until 1985, mainly on the Lecce-Maglie-Otranto connection.
Their relative low weight made possible to have a Ad-Rp couple being pulled by a Breda set from Lecce to Maglie to continue autonomously from Maglie to Otranto.
I could have used a Märklin miniclub schienenbus as starting base. On that the doors would have to be modified (the Macchifer had 4 sections on all doors, with glass panes in the high and low part) and also all sort of grating closed.
But I wanted to do a thorough work and take the opportunity to make a very low visual-impact motor plant.
So I chose to design the Macchifer in CAD. The model is made of 4 parts:
the body shell
the interior furnishing insert
,4. the two halves composing the chassis. These are actually identical and together allow mounting two 4mm ø micro motors, each driving a wheelset through a M0.2 gear train.
The first print had some errors that were fixed in the second.
Eventually the two models are almost completed (decals still to be made).
Nevertheless I can run them. See the two videos. One of the two units (railcar+trailer) running normally. The second shows the railcar with the body shell taken off. Notice how low the chassis is. I am rather pleased by that.

Le 'autorail legere unifies a kiosque' delle SNCF sono affascinanti per le loro forme atipiche, con la cabina pilota posta in posizione asimmetrica ed elevata.
Ho scelto di riprodurre la X5500 'mobylette' per via dell'atipico, e difficile da realizzare, rodiggio.
La specifica originale del 1939 richiedeva un'automotrice per linee secondarie:
in grado di trasportare 1.5 T di merci e fino ad 80 passeggeri
in composizione singola o con un solo rimorchio
con una sola cabina di guida
con massimo peso per asse di solo 5 tonnellate.
Il ridottissiomo peso assiale portò all'insolito rodiggio che ha due gruppi di 2 piccole sale montate con sospensione indipendente montata sul telaio., senza carrello.
La cassa non ha presentato problemi nella modellazione. Invece per ottenere una motorizzazione più simile all'originale che fosse anche facile da realizzare ho dovuto fare un bel pò di prove.
Il lungo passo fisso, in combinazione con i piccoli raggi di curva della scala Z portava dei problemi di contatto col binario che compromettevano la presa di corrente.
Alla fine (1) ho montato gli assali anteriori su una base che è libera di muoversi rispetto al telaio ed è assicurata ad esso solo dai fili di presa di corrente.

la verniciatura è nei tradizionali colori rosso e giallo, esegiita ad aerografo.
La marcia alla fine è abbastanza fluida (3).

The SNCF 'autorail legere unifies a kiosque' are fascinating for their atypical shapes, with the cockpit placed in an asymmetrical and elevated position. Everybody knows the famous X3800 'Picasso' but the family started with the X5500.
The original 1939 specification called for a railcar for secondary lines:
capable of carrying 1.5 T of goods and up to 80 passengers
in single composition or with only one trailer
with only one cockpit
with maximum weight per axle of only 5 tons.
The very low axial weight led to the unusual wheel arrangement, which has two groups of 2 small wheelsets which are independently suspended on the frame, no bogies.
I chose to reproduce the X5500 'mobylette' because of the atypical, and difficult to make, wheel arrangement.
The body shell did not present any problems in modelling. Conversely I had to do a lot of tests to produce a chassis that would work well.
The long fixed wheelbase, in combination with the small radii of the Z scale, led to contact problems with the track that compromised current pick-up.
In the end (1) I mounted the front wheelsets on a base which is free to move relative to the frame and is secured to it only by the power supply wires.

Axles, motor, pinion and a gear, come from the usual Rokuhan Shorty (2).
The painting is in the traditional red and yellow colors, applied with airbrush.
The quality of the ride at the end is quite smooth (3).

Il modello è diviso in 2 parti principali (1), scocca superiore e telaio.
Lo chassis è progettato per ospitare componenti da uno chassis Rokuhan shorty (2): motore, carrelli e PCB.
Il guscio e il telaio si incastrano strettamente (3).
I telai delle finestre vengono stampati separatamente mediante stampa a filamento (4).
La pittura è realizzata con aerografo, con linee rosse realizzate con carta decal.

The 85 units making this class were delivered by FIAT Materfer to FS between 1971 and 1973. Besides the different bogies, these units are identical to the Aln668 seres 1700.
The model is split in 2 main parts (1) , top shell and chassis.
The chassis is designed to host components from a Rokuhan shorty chassis (2): motor, bogies and PCB.
Shell and chassis tightly fit together (3).
Window frames are separately printed by filament printing (4).
Painting is by airbrush, with red-lines made with decal paper.
