I had already travelled most of the roads between Malelane to Lower Sabie, however this time I saw a lot less animals. I did see the common sightings, but less quantity.
After I checked in at Lower Sabie Reception, and secured my camp site, I attended to my Laundry to ensure I did not return home with a large amount of Laundry when I got home. While waiting for the laundry machine to do it's job, I went to the restaurant to view the beautiful site of the Sabie River. As I walked around, I bumped into Gavin from the Melalane Rest Camp. We chatted briefly before I returned to my laundry. After about 30min, I received a call from Gavin informing me of Lion along the H4-1, north of Lower Sabie. Once my laundry was completed, I headed out for the Day drive to cover sections north of Lower Sabie that I had not previously done
Driving north along the H4-1 there were a number of traffic congestions where traffic had stopped to view Lion. I saw the first lot of female Lion. I could not see the 2nd lot of male Lion due to the traffic, so I continued my trip. The H4-1 follows the Sabie river. I stopped off at the Nkuhlu Picnic site - The picnic area has a wonderfull view of the Sabie River.
I drove until the H12 and then turned east onto the S30. The S30 took me to the eastern side of the Sabie river, back to Lower Sabie. It is a beautiful route to follow.
I arrived back at the camp site at 16h00 and it was hot. I grabbed an ice-cold beer from my fridge and a handfull of mixed nuts and walked down to the fenceline where there are benches in the shade of the large trees to relax - This provides a great view of the Sabie river. What a wonderfully pieceful view of Buffalo, Elephant, Crocodiles and Giraffe and other antelope visiting the river. The Elephant crossed the river to munch reeds on the opposite river bank.
What a great way to spend the last evening in the Kruger National Park.
Lion along the H4-1
The Nkuhlu Shop and Picnic Site along the H4-1
I drove through this forest on the S30 and there was Giraffe, Impala and Nyala
Lower Sabie Rest Camp - Elephant crossing the river
Lower Sabie rest camp was very busy. I had to drive around to find a vacant camp site.
As this was my last night, it was important to ensure the Reception issued me with an EXIT PASS to allow me to exit the park the following day.
The location along the Sabie River is fantastic and if you relax on the deck at the restaurant and watch the river long enough, you will see Hippo, Buffalo, Crocodile, Elephant and other wildlife visiting the river.
