RP Rules and Guidelines

《 General RP Rules 》

Breaking any of the RP rules will be considered a level 1 offense, depending on the circumstances of the rule-breaking you may be punished for breaking these rules. Certain rules may be considered level 2 or level 3 offenses.

  1. No Godlike abilities! Characters all have strengths and weaknesses, but characters should be reasonably balanced. A character also should not be able to perform actions which should be impossible; examples include shattering armor with a punch or grabbing the sharp end of a sword without being cut. (see: godmodding!)

  2. No Metagaming! Metagaming is when a character acts based on information which they shouldn’t know - an example being reading a previous RP in which an item was hidden, and then going straight to the spot it was hidden and retrieving it. (see: Metagaming!)

  3. Give your RP partner a chance! When performing an action which affects another player, give them a chance to respond to that action, for example: *Myst ducks beneath the punch, before swiftly dashing forward and knocking her opponent to the floor*. Instead, say: *Myst ducks beneath the punch, preparing to dash towards her opponent*. This gives your partner a chance to decide how their character might react. (see Autoing!)

  4. Keep within your lore! One of the most interesting parts of RP is creating an interesting character with lore and personality; when Roleplaying, you should always try to keep within the lore of your character. For example, Periannath’s foreign minister Resin is known for their fear of violence, going limp at even the smallest threat; if they suddenly became incredibly violent without reason, they would be breaking lore.

  5. Expanding on rule four: Having you character reference to things outside Exilus or try and interact with people or things that do not exist inside Exilus is considered "Breaking The Fourth Wall" and should not be done. (See: Fourth Wall)

  6. Do not control other people’s characters without their input or consent! People work incredibly hard on their characters, so you should treat their characters with respect. Don’t decide what their character will do or tell them what happens to their character - for example: *Africa trips on the stairs, falls and breaks their neck.* (see: Powerplaying!)

  7. Do not dominate roleplay, when you are roleplaying give other's a chance to be the main focus or have a spotlight. Repeatedly making the story focus only on you and your character is not acceptable. (See: Main Character Syndrome)

  8. Be creative! When designing a character, try to avoid classic cliches, creating a perfect character, creating a perfect image of yourself or a character who’s incredibly powerful; a flawed character has a chance to grow, and is much more interesting to play! (see: Mary Sues/Marty Stus!)

  9. You may not roleplay with you character until the character is approved! Once it is approved you will receive the RPer role and be able to roleplay freely.

《 RP Romance Rules 》

These rules are very strict and are generally non-negotiable unless stated otherwise. These rules exist due to the sizeable presence of minors of the server and are very important.

  1. No players under the age of 15 (IRL) should engage in any sort of romantic RP, unless given express permission by an admin or owner.

  2. Romance is strictly limited to:

          • Kissing (not graphic, e.g. no french kissing), holding hands, hugging, cuddling, dates, touching (parts of the body you'd let a stranger touch only, no private areas), platonic sleeping together and other mundane romantic gestures. This is for every in-game chat and discord chat. Any other romantic actions, especially including anything sexual will be an instant 1 day ban.

  3. Players between 15 and 17 (IRL) may engage in romantic RP, but only with other players in the same age bracket. (e.g. A 15 and 16 year old, a 17 year old and a 15 year old, a 17 and 17 year old and so on)

  4. Players over the age of 18 (IRL) may only engage in RP with players over the age of 18. In the case of a large age gap an admin or owner should be consulted (10+ years)

  5. Characters under the age of 15 (RP) may not engage in romantic RP, even if the player controlling them is the correct age.

  6. Characters between the ages of 15 and 17 (RP) may engage in romantic RP but only with other characters in the same age bracket. (e.g. a 15 and 16 year old, a 17 year old and a 15 year old, a 17 and 17 year old and so on)

  7. Characters over the age of 18 (RP) may only engage in RP with characters over the age of 18. In the case of a large age gap an admin or owner should be consulted.

  8. Players over the age of 18 (IRL) may play minor characters, <18, however they should check in with an owner or admin and they will not be permitted to engage in any romance.

  9. Incest of any kind will not be tolerated (Whether the relation is in RP or IRL), it does not matter if they are a 4th cousin. This is for every in-game chat and discord chat. Incest RP is an instant 1 week ban.

  10. Pedophilia of any kind, whether related to IRL or RP will not be tolerated. This is for every in-game chat and discord chat. Pedophilia is an instant permanent ban with no appeal.

  11. Any other controversial or taboo topic related to romance is not allowed, such as kinks, necrophilia, rape, sexual assault and more. Punishments vary depending on the offense, but most taboo topics would be a 1 week ban or above, meaning a level 2 or 3 offense. This does not include same sex relationships, they are allowed, though the rules on controversial topics/LGBT still apply and when discussing same sex relationships you should keep the discussion to your in-game character only.

《 RP Violence and Graphic Themes Rules》

Violence is somewhat limited due to the young age of some of the minors present on the server. If you are unsure if what you intend to do would be considered too graphic, you can check with a staff member just to be sure.

  1. Violence should generally be limited to fall within these guidelines:

    • Europe | PEGI 12 - "Video games that show violence of a slightly more graphic nature towards fantasy characters or non-realistic violence towards human-like characters would fall in this age category.”

    • USA | ESRB T: Teen - "For children aged 13 and up, a T-rated game may have moderate violence and strong language”

    • Australia | M: Mature - "Recommended for teens over 15, Mature games can include moderate violence that could have a "moderate impact" on the player. Bad language can crop up from time to time"

  2. Bad language should be used where appropriate only and it is preferable if that language is kept RP and Lore friendly.

  3. The following things are not allowed in any capacity:

    • Slavery - Servants are allowed, but slavery, mentions to slavery and slave trading are forbidden.

    • Graphic mutilation - Chopping off someone's limbs in battle, cutting/scarring them or similar actions are allowed as long as the other player is okay with it. For example: *Africa swings his sword, the sharp blade slices through CookieKing's arm, severing it*. Graphic descriptions of excessive mutilation are prohibited.

    • Torture- All graphic torture is not allowed. Torture may only be alluded to, something like: *Advis takes Myst to the torture chamber*.

    • Public executions - Forbidden, characters may be killed but creating a public spectacle out of a character's death is not allowed.

    • Mass murder/Serial killing – Roleplaying as a mass murderer or serial killer is prohibited.

    • Genocide /Ethnic cleansing – Forbidden in all aspects.

  4. Drug use is not allowed, with the exception of smoking pipe weed and drinking alcohol. No drug dealing or manufacturing will be tolerated, except for the brewing of alcohol and manufacture of pipe-weed. See the next rule for alcohol use guidelines.

  5. Alcohol use should be limited to recreation use however, mild addiction and reference to it is okay. Full blown alcoholism or alcohol addiction is not allowed.

  6. Gambling should be kept to recreational gambling only, such as playing cards or various sorts of dice games for small prize pools. Organised gambling is highly discouraged and gambling addictions are not be roleplayed.

《 Character Creation 》

Character creation is generally up to your imagination, there are only a few limitations on what can be played. Most characters will be allowed as long as they fit with the Medieval Fantasy aesthetic of the server, some more detailed recommendations and guidelines can be found below:

Guidelines: (Must be followed)

  1. Characters can not have overpowered abilities with little to no downsides.

  2. Characters can not be gods or demi-gods, as that would make them too powerful.

  3. If a character is an animal, they either need to be an anthropomorphic human-like beast race, the mind or spirit of a human in an animal's body with legitimate RP reason for why it happens (Check with an Admin or Owner for approval) or role-played as if they are an actual animal, not an animal acting like a human.

  4. Characters can not be perfect with no flaws whatsoever.

  5. Characters may only be a baby, toddler or small child if approved by an Admin or Owner.

  6. Staff reserve the right to ask you as a player to change a character if it is considered too overpowered.

  7. When creating a custom race, make sure to consult a senior staff member.

  8. You may have only eight racial traits and four racial powers.

Recommendations:

  1. A good character is a character with nearly as many flaws as they have good traits, that way there is room for a character to grow and improve over time. All characters should have some flaws though, even after a very long time.

  2. When writing a backstory for your character, it's important to include things like:

      • Where they came from or were born and a short description of that place.

      • Any important events from their past that may have led to them arriving in Exilus or that have shaped them as a person.

      • Their family and friends.

      • What their life may have been like growing up including their wealth, class and how happy their childhood was.

      • Adding certain details in the backstory that may explain why your character is good at certain things, why they may have certain hobbies and also why they may like/dislike or fear certain things is very important.

  3. When creating you character's appearance think about:

      • Their eye, hair and skin colour. If you want to be more detailed you could include their hair length and texture and other defining features in this category.

      • What shape their face is, is it round? Thin? Chiselled? Heart shaped?

      • Their weight and the shape of their body. Are they very thin and frail? Large and overweight? Big and muscly? Tall and lanky?

      • What clothes do they wear, what do they look like and what colour are they?

      • What equipment or items do they generally carry around? Do they carry a bow, a dagger or a sword? Or do they carry around a trinket given to them by their grandmother? Or perhaps they always carry a flask of alcohol to drink from it?

  4. What are the goals of your character? Do they want to get revenge for a dead family member? Do they want to open a shop or run a farm? Do they want to go adventuring for loot and glory or just simply settle down in a humble house and have a quiet life?

  5. What is your character good at? Not good at? Do they have any specific fears or things that upset them? What do they enjoy doing (e.g. Hobbies) and the things they may like or dislike? Do they have any specific skills that they could use?

  6. Their racial traits, which are things like knowledge, extra strength and endurance, resistance to certain things such as fire or poison, dark vision and anything else that they receive because of their racial background, not because of their individual skills and abilities. See the races section for more info.

《 Races 》

When it comes to the races of Exilus, you are allowed to create your own, however you should consult a senior staff member when doing so to make sure the abilities and downsides of your race are balanced and to make sure it fits thematically with the server's lore. If you would like to create a race that other people could use or edit the race you've created for that purpose, please consult a senior staff member so that it can be added as an approved race.

Most of the D&D races can be used, though the format will likely have to be modified somewhat to fit with the kind of roleplaying we do on the server. A good example is the Dwarves stonecunning, instead of getting a bonus to an Intelligence (History check) your character would be considered to be knowledgeable in the origin of stonework and would likely know more than someone's character who does not, allowing you to roleplay that you know the origin of a stonework or carving. Another example is Dwarven Resilience, this would be played like your character either has an immunity or extreme resistance to poison, so you would be able to say in a roleplay situation in which someone tries to poison you, that it does not work due to your resistance.

A list of suitable D&D races for the the server can be found below:

  • Arakocra

  • Dragonborn

  • Dwarf

  • Elf

  • Gnome

  • Goblin

  • Goliath

  • Half-Elf

  • Half-Orc

  • Halfling

  • Hobgoblin

  • Human

  • Kobold

  • Leonin

  • Lizardfolk

  • Loxodon

  • Minotaur

  • Orc

  • Satyr

  • Tabaxi

  • Tiefling

  • Tortle

Other D&D races or D&D homebrew races will be considered but are subject to the same rules as player created races, they must be discussed and approved by a senior staff member.

Approved Custom Races:

Aka - A hardy humanoid race with three distinct tribes. (W.I.P by Myst)

《 Multiple Characters 》

Multiple characters are allowed with some restrictions. Up to three characters can be played at a single time, no more than three will be allowed. Only one character can be played in-game at a time, this character is considered your Main Character. If you would like to change your main character, you must make sure that something happens within the RP that would make sense for you changing your main character. Examples include death of the character, the character going missing, the character going insane and being locked away, the character committing a major crime and being indefinitely jailed and other similar situations. Make sure it is obvious that your main character is going to change and that staff members are aware.

In order to be able to play a second and third character, you must discuss it with an admin or owner and be given express permission to play the character. Only players proven to be experts at roleplay will be allowed to have more than one character due to the inherent difficulty of playing more than one character at once.

Any additional characters must only be role-played through discord, you have quite a few choices as to how you could do this, but ultimately it's up to you. They could be communicating through letters or correspondence, they could be communicating magically from some distance away, they could be a ghost, they could be a multiple personality or something else entirely.

We have a discord bot that allows for easy switching between characters and that also allows other players to easily see which character is currently talking.
