Today was the first day of school for Connor!
When he turned three, ECI (Early Childhood Intervention) had to discharge him and so he no longer gets visits from "his ladies" - the nutritionist, feeding therapist and case manager. They transitioned him to the school district who assessed him and decided he qualified for their early childhood learning program. Because of his medical condition and the need to have a full-time nurse at the school he attends, he is going to the PPCD class at a nearby school. To keep the boys together, Ian is attending there too. So both boys started at their new school today!
I've been having anxiety attacks the last two weeks wondering how many germs will be brought home and how both boys will adjust to a new school. I'm sure the staff at the new school thinks I'm completely neurotic and OCD now and they'd probably be right. Oh well, that's what motherhood does, I guess. Luckily, we think the staff so far is pretty great. Not a single one of them rolled their eyes when we went through Connor's schedule, our concerns about germs and monitoring his glucose. The week before school started, they all patiently listened as we talked too fast and went over our spreadsheets, charts and documents with all the things that might possibly could happen in the three hours a day that Connor will spend with them. Hopefully very little will happen except that Connor will thoroughly enjoy his social time and they will think we were overreacting!
Connor had a blast at school and Ian said his day was "grr-eat!" A fitting remark and nods to Frosted Flakes, since their school mascot is a Tiger!
When I took Connor in, I tried not to hover too badly. He cheerfully went off hand-in-hand with his teacher and was only mildly puzzled when I didn't follow. "Mom! Mom?" That was it.
When I came to pick him up it was a different story. He excitedly came over and gave me a hug. Then promptly turned back around to follow his class around. While the rest of the kids were being herded toward the doors, I tried to get him to go the opposite direction so we could meet up with big brother. "No, mom. I go this-a-way!" He didn't want to come home with me. He wanted to go with all the other kids. Yeah. He had a good time his first day of school. :)
