At Middle School Camp 2024
From May 28th - 29th I joined four senior students to help out at this year's middle school camp at Nanga, Dwellingup. On arrival, we helped the students unload their bags from the bus and get settled in their bunkhouse. We began leading teamwork activities with them at one o'clock, starting with get-to-know-me's and human knots. We then supported them to form groups of 8 and challenged them to a Minute to Win It contest. The students, though apprehensive at first, excitedly cheered on their teammates and peers during their favourite activities and we adapted the order of challenges based on which ones the students enjoyed most. After an hour and a half of challenges, the students had free time to explore Nanga and us seniors had some time to ourselves outside. Later on, we assisted the students in cooking dinner before joining their community meeting where we participated in a Senior Q&A. We shared our journey through Montessori, our senior projects and advice for the younger ones. Though we had no questions in the meeting, a few students made an effort to chat to us afterward which was lovely to see. We spent the rest of the evening chatting with the students and each other before making s'mores for dessert. We slept intermittedly between the rain and woke up early the next morning to chat to a few more students before we left. I enjoyed seeing their enthusiasm grow throughout the activities, and seeing my peers take on leadership roles alongside me. It was nice to make connections with the students, and we continue to catch up with them every now and then back at school.Â
