Part of this project includes the use of technology to create a profile of a Greek god so students can get to know figureheads in ancient Greek (see the last document at the end of the page). This social media profile is part of a whole unit which introduces ancient Greece and its ancient civilization. This particular artifact is an overview of the entire "Rise of Greek Civilization" unit; what will be covered, the day-to-day assignments and activities students will complete, the assessments throughout the 10-day unit, and what kind of technology and collaboration students will participate in as part of their SEL skills focus. Provided below are the instructions for the profile project students will complete at the beginning of the unit as well as the final project students will work on throughout the unit.
Social media is part of today's world, especially around this grade level (6th grade) where students are developing into teenagers. There are many pros and cons of utilizing social media profiles to showcase a person (or in this case, a god), which relates to showcasing one's self on social media; whats fake and whats real, how can we express ourselves on different platforms, and how can we connect these ancient beliefs to today. The entire profile project is reliant on creating something with technology and the discussion surrounding it (if technology fails, the back-up plan is to create a hand-drawn version using magazines and other printed media to create a collage).
In full disclosure, I have not taught this unit, however throughout this process of putting together this unit, I learned how much time and brainpower goes into creating something like this; seeing how the pieces fit together, making sure standards and skills are included and met, and how to monitor student progress and learning while having an engaging lesson.
