This project entails making a book–whether it is a short story, a personal story, or an anecdotal story–not just the writing but the depictions as well. There are many processes included within this project: the drafting, writing, and drawing processes. The book was made on an online platform, however it is also easy to make with a pencil and paper if going to the technology route is too complicated for students. Going through the processes of drafting up an idea for the book, writing then revising then rewriting, to finally drawing pictures and borders and a book cover showcases to the students what the process of making a book entails. There are other online platforms that create books of students' work, depending on the age level of the students.
This particular project showcases the opportunity to incorporate visual arts to content learning of writing and processes of drafting, writing, and revising. The document to the right is an example of throwing in my own artistic abilities. And students can draw electronically or on paper, depending on how they to draw, just as long as they are expressing their creativity and ability to create images, which gets incorporated into their learning of writing in the end. There is also the possibility of doing a read aloud, where students can practice their presentation or theatrical reading skills.
This is a lengthy process, depending on how detail oriented you are. So for some students, this process might take over a month whereas for others, they might be done within two weeks. Making sure that there are procedures in place to ensure that students know what to do with their books and what to do when they are done. It might even be worthwhile if students help others in any of the process. One thing that might be hard for younger students is using the technology version, especially when it comes to scanning and uploading images to their accounts and then sizing it so it fits on the page. Depending on the age level, making the book electronically may prove to be more difficult than it is worth if the focus of the lesson is for drawing and writing.
