For my Math lab placement, my mentor teacher used GoMath, so as to not disrupt the general flow of the classroom, that is what I used. For one of my first lessons, I was placed with the 4th graders who were focusing on problem solving: multistep multiplication problems. My students focused on multiplication problems that were part of a multistep process. They also utilized the method of drawing a diagram to understand the problem and what it was asking for.
This is one of the lessons I taught that I utilized and connected for the final lesson I taught during this Math lab placement. This is a common math problem and utilizing the draw a diagram method can be used for other mathematical equations further down the road. I saw a repeated pattern of my students thinking that they were done after the first step and did not connect that the question was asking for them to continue. This is something I had to revisit the following lesson.
My students continued to have a misconception that all of the problems presented were not a multistep problem. They thought after one multiplication set, they had the answer. It was hard to connect what the question was asking to the students' misconception of single-step multiplication. I still feel like the students did not fully understand why they needed to continue after the first step despite my simplification of the problem and multiple set-ups of a diagram to match. This is something that I need to work on and figure out how to connect for the students.
