This packet was put together by the group of 1st grade teaching staff members who, after having their PLC meeting, discussed and decided on how they would address the students' struggle with connecting comprehension and application of a concept. For my students, their new concept focused on long "oi/oy" vowel team, which was reflected in the activities in the packet. Most of this lesson was independent work, however the students could work together to check their answers and ask me questions. I assisted with some clarification of the long "oi/oy" vowel team rules and defined some unknown words.
I have not seen this type of packet before, nor remember doing this in any of my ELA classes in elementary school, so I was fascinated by how the PLC committee decided on this instruction to assist student learning and progress. The activities incorporate visual and written forms to meet the individual students' different needs as well as build on the previous activity to enhance learning and continue application of the concept. I also like how the packet allowed for student creativity to be incorporated with coloring the pictures, which focuses on fine motor skills like coloring in the lines and using appropriate colors (if wanted). This all is included in a 1st grade classroom's curriculum standards.
Depictions incorporated with the words is a great added tool for students, especially the visual learners. There seems to be a connection for students who can visually see what the word does/is to then sound it out to spell it. All of the students in my small group breezed through the page depicted on the left, correcting only a few mistakes by remembering and using the rules that we reviewed at the beginning of the lesson. I have never been more grateful for reviewing the vowel team rule before continuing with the activity.
