For my Math lab placement, my mentor teacher used GoMath, so as to not disrupt the general flow of the classroom, that is what I used. Towards the middle of my lab placement, I was placed with the 5th graders who were focusing on problem solving: division. My students focused on division problems that were part of a multistep process, which involved both division and multiplication. They also utilized the method of drawing a diagram to understand the problem and what it was asking for.
After explaining the process, why the process was used and how it can be applicable in everyday life, two of my students continued on with their work. While I was going around, helping the students, I noticed that these two particular students were using a different strategy to check their work. I was very proud of them because they were using methods they were comfortable with and understood.
After two pages of these types of problems, my students showed signs of understanding as well as exhaustion with the problem type. I had also asked them to complete the other two pages within this lesson, but after talking with my mentor teacher, she was satisfied with the students' progress and understanding, and felt that they did not have to complete more work because of it. This is something I want to take into consideration for my future classroom.
