Advanced RF Front-End Analysis: Loop, Preselector, and External BFO Demodulation
Advanced RF Front-End Analysis: Loop, Preselector, and External BFO Demodulation
minore fatica d’ascolto
audio più naturale
rumore percepito come “dietro” la modulazione
Il preselettore RF svolge un ruolo decisivo:
restringe la banda prima del mixer
attenua segnali fuori banda
riduce IMD e interferenze laterali
i rumori vengono soppressi
ha IF larga
ha AGC gommoso
ha audio povero
ha rumore interno
ha front‑end debole
il BC‑221T non può salvarlo.
Il risultato sarebbe:
voce impastata
rumore in primo piano
audio duro
intelligibilità bassa
Peggio di un ricevitore SSB diretto.
La SSB diretta offre:
lettura S‑meter corretta
frequenza immediata
nessun BFO da regolare
Ma se il ricevitore è mediocre:
il rumore domina
la voce è artificiale
l’audio è duro
l’AGC pompa
il DSP respira
l’intelligibilità crolla
Molti SDR moderni, anche costosi, producono audio frusciante e poco naturale.
Il sistema composto da:
Loop iniezione silenzioso
Preselettore selettivo
After analyzing SSB demodulation using an external carrier (BC‑221T) and a high‑selectivity AM receiver (Hitachi FT‑J2), it is necessary to complete the technical picture by describing the role of the antenna, the loop, the preselector, and the entire RF chain.
These elements determine the final quality of the received signal and contribute to the characteristic “mute combination,” where the voice emerges clearly and the noise is pushed underneath the injected carrier.
The loop used in this system has three essential characteristics:
Very low intrinsic noise
Linear response
No self‑oscillations or internal disturbances
A properly built loop does not introduce hiss, does not amplify band noise, and does not generate artifacts. This allows the BC‑221T and the Hitachi FT‑J2 to work on a “clean” signal, where the voice is already separated from the natural background of the band.
The result is:
higher intelligibility
reduced listening fatigue
more natural audio
noise perceived as “behind” the modulation
The RF preselector plays a decisive role:
narrows the RF bandwidth before the mixer
attenuates out‑of‑band signals
reduces IMD and lateral interference
stabilizes the level of the useful signal
improves the shape of the received waveform
In practice, the preselector “prepares” the incoming wave for the BC‑221T and the Hitachi FT‑J2, removing everything that is not voice.
This leads to:
more precise demodulation
better voice centering
reduced lateral noise
greater tonal stability
When:
the loop is silent
the preselector is selective
the BC‑221T carrier is set at the correct level
the Hitachi FT‑J2 operates in its linear zone
you obtain the well‑known mute combination:
noise is suppressed
the voice emerges full and natural
the band background is submerged under the carrier
the audio is complete and pleasant
intelligibility is maximum even below S9
This behavior is impossible to achieve with a mediocre direct‑SSB receiver or with an SDR that is not properly engineered.
If the AM receiver:
has a wide IF
has a “rubbery” AGC
has poor audio
has internal noise
has a weak front‑end
the BC‑221T cannot save it.
The result would be:
muddy voice
noise in the foreground
harsh audio
low intelligibility
Worse than a direct SSB receiver.
Direct SSB reception offers:
correct S‑meter readings
immediate tuning
no external BFO required
But if the receiver is mediocre:
noise dominates
the voice becomes artificial
audio becomes harsh
AGC pumps
DSP breathes
intelligibility collapses
Many modern SDRs, even expensive ones, produce harsh, noisy, and unnatural audio.
The system composed of:
Silent loop
Selective preselector
Pure BC‑221T carrier
High‑selectivity Hitachi FT‑J2
represents an RF chain where the voice is always in front and the noise always behind.
An audio quality that many modern SSB receivers—even high‑end SDR units—cannot achieve.
English version;
NB — Additional technical note regarding loop injection from inside the house to the antenna.
The stability and intelligibility of the received audio are intrinsically linked to the way the BFO signal is injected into an AM receiver in this configuration. In this system, the loop plays a decisive role in ensuring clean, stable, and linear carrier injection.
The loop used here is a 320 mm dedicated loop, specifically designed for this function, built with:
RG‑58 MIL‑spec cable
a custom‑wound toroidal transformer
a single‑ended injection topology
To achieve proper carrier injection, only the center conductor of the RG‑58 must be connected to the BC‑221T output, while the shield (braid) must be connected only to the loop, without being returned to the BC‑221T chassis.
This configuration is essential because the BC‑221T has an internal output impedance of approximately 5000 ohms, which naturally returns to ground through the other devices connected to the BC‑221T via the dedicated grounding wire.
By avoiding a direct shield return to the BC‑221T, the loop operates in a clean, high‑impedance injection mode, preventing:
unwanted ground loops
distortion of the injected carrier
instability or modulation artifacts
noise feedback into the BFO path
With this method, the injected carrier remains:
stable
clean
high‑purity
suitable for any signal level received by the antenna
This allows the system to demodulate any incoming SSB signal with extreme ease, regardless of its strength, while maintaining excellent intelligibility and natural audio reproduction.
Audio Result: The system reveals modulations perfectly, even down toward S0. The sound is full‑bodied, with a true broadcasting character within the limits of the band. It is beautiful, clean, complete, with a clear tendency toward hi‑fi quality.
Strong signals remain perfectly intelligible. For very powerful local stations, I added an attenuator up to 100 dB, but even so, the audio invites you to stay on the radio without fatigue or discomfort, and without being overwhelmed by band noise.
Splatter is strongly suppressed; the classic “glic‑glic” from adjacent channels is eliminated. This results in spectacular audio — the kind of monitoring quality only the BBC used to deliver in its golden days.
I am not exaggerating: I have the excellent Realistic as a comparison, and I have owned Drake TR‑4C, Kenwood TS‑140… There is simply no comparison. They are like sheets of paper to be torn apart when judged against this level of cleanliness and the spectacular, broadcasting‑grade spectral components.
Additional Note: The gear system and BFO‑centering mechanism of the BC‑221T are impeccable. There is no mechanical precision today that can compete with it. A plastic VFO will always remain a plastic VFO — even if it reaches the exact hertz, it will never provide true stability when clarifying voice. This applies equally to modern SDR units with encoder tuning, which honestly are enough to make freshly vaccinated chickens and hens in heat burst out laughing.
When you adjust the VFO of the BC‑221T, you feel the quality. You feel the centering. It is mechanical truth — not simulated, not interpolated, not “DSP‑processed.” It is the real thing.
IO QUANDO HO TEMPO MI DIVERTO COSì!!!
Appunto sulle elettroniche odierne
Modern electronics, especially today’s transceivers, are undoubtedly superb: roofing filters, advanced DSP, automatic processing and an overall signal cleanliness that was unthinkable years ago.
However, I would like to clarify one point.
In my daily listening I hear mostly excellent modulations, but I am surprised that some modern radios still emit “dirty” signals. The reason is simple: today’s digital systems, thanks to their filtering and internal processing, often tend to hide the defects of the other station, beautifying the audio and smoothing out imperfections.
The problem is that sound should not be altered: when a defect exists, it should be detected, not masked.
This is why an analog chain immediately reveals what a digital chain often conceals. It is not an advantage; it is a trick that works only up to a certain point. When the correspondent’s problem becomes worse, it eventually becomes noticeable even to these modern “non plus ultra” electronics.
