Reading Shitty first drafts, by Anne Lamott is such a great way to start any writing assignment. She eases the audiences mind by explaining that writing any type of essay, blog, or book is a process and is takes a few drafts before finally delivering the perfect final product.
Lamott tells the audience that even the greatest authors that we know and love have a shitty first draft. She says that it is important to first get our ideas down on paper, even if it doesn't make much sense at the time. She calls this the child's draft. The child's draft is pretty much word vomit. You may write 5 pages of nonsense, but when you go back and reread what you have written, you might find a few ideas that you absolutely love and can use in the final draft.
I really like how Lamott eases the audiences mind by saying everyone, including professional authors dread starting a new project. She herself shared a time when she would write food reviews and would procrastinate on getting started. This really spoke to me because I also procrastinate when it comes to completing assignments that look intimidating to me.
Over all I think reading this article was helpful and makes me feel more at ease when it comes to writing assignments, and beyond that, doing things I find intimidatingly.
