Unexpected Guest

Love was an unexpected guest -

They dressed the table finely,

They placed the food and wine, and

She came without behest:

They said she was not real,

They said she was a demon,

And all these things, so deeming

They thought would be their will:

The heart was with them, wise and kind,

Psychology and science

And grappling with the lions

Was the unconscious mind:

And then - what do they know?

Through back door she appeared

Without worry or fear

The passion to bestow:

In one hand, rose; and knife in

Another - wise, conditioned,

In death throbs of ambition

Dissolved in vintage wine:

How could it be? They wondered so,

They thought she was refuted

With logic undisputed -

Where did that logic go?

Why did this guest appear?

They thought her nonexistent

They thought they were resistan

tTo passion and to fear:

What was her name? Who was she?

No time: Here is she aiming

At them - no time for taming

She's coming right at me:

With knife with which they cut their pies

She stabbed me, and I thanked her,

And then became just like her

And was set free from lies.
