Pathways
To address teacher shortages and expand the diversity of educators, districts are increasingly turning to teacher pathways or teacher academies in high school.
Referred to as Grow Your Own pipelines, these pathways seek to engage students in considering the education profession as a career choice.
Working with Sinclair Community College, Mad River Local Schools and Dayton Public Schools developed their own teacher prep programs. Students in the project earn up to 12 hours through the College Credit Plus program and or CTE. Teachers within the program become adjunct instructors through Sinclair Community College. As a result of this partnership, high school students receive college credit.
We believe the GYO teacher academies starting in high school will result in considerable benefits for all potential future educators, including students of color, by engaging the best and brightest students in considering teaching. While two districts just started GYO pathways, we project more sites will be developed by 2023.
