In General
1. Dogs must be on short leashes.
2. Report suspicious activities or potential problems to Hope Ranch Patrol (805-967-8335).
3. Walk with your level of fitness and the terrain in mind. Tell others where you will be walking.
4. Know when to stop walking.
5. Approach people you meet with a friendly greeting.
6. Be a good steward: pick up litter and dispose of it properly.
When Walking Along Roads
1. Walk on the road only when there is no traffic, otherwise walk on the roadside trail.
2. Walk facing traffic, but cross over safely if there is no shoulder on your side of the road.
3. Wear bright colors in the daytime and light-colored or reflective clothing at night.
4. Make eye/voice contact with other walkers, riders, and drivers.
5. Walk aware — use cell phone only for emergencies or photo stops.
6. If you must use headphones or earbuds keep the volume low so that you can hear warnings from others.
When Walking On Trails
1. Stay on the trail. Don't take shortcuts.
2. Stay to the right on wider paths and pass on the left.
3. Whenever you stop to rest or enjoy the view, please move off the trail.
4. Hikers going uphill should be given the right of way.
5. When hiking in a group, hike single file or take no more than half of a wide trail.
6. Keep conversations quiet and avoid using cell phones.
When Meeting A Horse And Rider
1. Look ahead to avoid surprises. If you see a horse coming hum a tune so that the horse does not think you are sneaking up on it.
2. If you are relaxed, they will be relaxed! Try to look up and smile at the rider. The horse will get it even if the rider on him doesn’t.
3. Stay on the edge of the trail on the downhill side, as horses tend to bolt uphill when spooked.
4. Be chivalrous if there is a steep drop off so that the horse is not forced close to the edge.
5. Calmly greet the rider. If they seem nervous, ask them if you need to move further away.
6. Stand quietly while the horse passes you by. Make no abrupt movements.
