Agapanthus, commonly known as Lily of the Nile is not a lily at all but the family is in the monocot order Asparagales. The name is derived from scientific Greek: agape or "love" and anthos or "flower". The species are native to Southern Africa though some have become naturalized in scattered places around the world. It loves the climate and soil in Hope Ranch, grows vigorously, and is insect resistant. Though the flowers are most frequently a pale blue, there are also white varieties.
