Calandrinia spectabilis (Shining Pink) is a spectacular Chilean perennial succulent that produces many bright magenta, 1.5 inch, rose-like flowers. The smooth-margined and tough spoon-shaped leaves singly can reach 2 inches in length and collectively can produce a dense mound up to 10 inches tall and 4 feet wide. Appearing in spring, the cup-shaped flowers grow 2 feet above the rosette, waving in the breeze like Iceland poppies. Each stem typically produces at least 10 flowers. Though individual flowers stay open only a day or two, mature plants will send up an endless succession of flowering spikes over a long season, from spring into the fall. This sturdy plant thrives in heat and drought when established.
