Romneya (named for Irish astronomer John Thomas Romney) belong the poppy family (Papaveraceae). They are known commonly as Matilija poppies and are native to California. The perennial subshrubs grow to a height of 8 feet with the flowers 5 inches in diameter. The silvery green leaves are deeply cut, with a small fringe of hairs at the margins. They are notable for their large white flowers with intense yellow centers and produce the largest flowers of any members of the poppy family. As you can imagine, Matilijas are also known as the "fried egg flower."
