Nineteen Ramblers met at Hope Ranch Beach at mid-afternoon on a beautiful summer day. After friendly greetings we strolled along the wet sand eastward toward the Boathouse at Hendry's Beach. Since the tide was receding and there was a little surf, we were assured to have ample time to enjoy eats and drinks and still return to our starting point without getting our feet wet. There were plenty of tables available when we arrived at the Boathouse where we enjoyed leisurely outdoor dining and lively conversations while looking out at the blue Pacific. Some of us returned by shuttle to Hope Ranch Beach while others simply walked back. There we found Tom Schowe waiting for us with a carefully constructed campfire and all the makings for s'mores. Chef Christina Schowe expertly instructed novice Ramblers on the fine art of campfire cooking. Following a lovely sunset we packed up and departed for home. One of us returned a few hours later to view the summer Milky Way towering over the Pacific above Santa Cruz Island, a rare sight in urban areas and one of the special gifts of living in Hope Ranch.
