This is the -o-e sound
This sound is found at the end of some words. The dash between the two letters, tells us that there will be a letter between the i and the o.
The e at the end of the word, changes the /o/ sound to an /O/ sound. For example, the -o- in the word "pop" makes an /o/ sound, but if we add an e to the end of the word (pope), the /o/ sound becomes an /O/ sound. This is called the magic e rule.
Synthetic Inquiry: The magic e rule also applies to other vowels. Find 2 word examples for the following sounds a-e, e-e, i-e, u-e. Challenge yourself to think of the words in your head or use technology to support you.
