This is the -ck and -ke sounds
These both make the /k/ sound
When spelling a word that ends with a /k/ sound, there is a simple rule to know whether to use -ck or -ke
If the vowel before the /k/ sound is short (/a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/) then we use -ck
If the vowel before the /k/ sound is long (/A/, /E/, /I/, /O/, /U/) then we use -ke
Synthetic Inquiry: Some words use -k to make the /k/ sound at the end of a word. Watch the video to find out which words use -k and write an explanation with examples in your book to teach someone who doesn't know this rule.
