This is the -a-e sound

This sound is found at the end of some words. The dash between the two letters, tells us that there will be a letter between the a and the e.

The e at the end of the word, changes the /a/ sound to an /A/ sound. For example, the -a- in the word "tap" makes an /a/ sound, but if we add an e to the end of the word (tape), the /a/ sound becomes an /A/ sound. This is called the magic e rule.
