Copy of Report (1921)
A marked improvement has been made in this school since the last inspection. The work proceeds in a business-like way, and the children are trained to express themselves readily and politely.
The individual methods used allow the children to advance from stage to stage each at his or her own rate, and gratifying progress is manifest. The complete application of these methods requires a liberal provision of apparatus to ensure that each child may be suitably and usefully occupied. The teachers are devoting time and interest to the preparation of such "occupations" and illustrations as they can contribute themselves. Anything the Local Education Authority can do to help them in this respect will be a great boon.
It is unfortunate that, owing to shortage of accommodation, a number of children cannot be admitted at the usual age, and are thus liable to serious retardation throughout their school life.
Nov 7th Owing to the shortened school year, it will be necessary in the Upper Section of the school to spend more time upon Reading than is specified in the Time Table, consequently arrangements have been made accordingly.

Copy Report October 1922
For a considerable time from the last report and up to the appointment of the present Head Mistress, her predecessor was unable through ill health to attend school and finally resigned her post.
During the inspection, a very favourable impression was formed of the new regime. The Head Mistress is eminently fitted by temperament to be in charge of a school of young children and in addition has sound views on their training and education.
The class teachers who are in full sympathy with her plans work in close co-operation with her.
Tone is pleasing: great care is taken in matters of cleanliness; the children are on good terms with their teachers; they enjoy their lessons, and are even sometimes reluctant to leave them for recreation. The progress noted justifies the expectation of a very successful year.

Report by H.M.I. Miss Brown and Mr J Strachan
This is a well conducted school. The work is carefully thought out and the teachers throw themselves heart and soul into it. The children lead a happy busy life and pass on well prepared to the Boys' and Girls' Departments.
In one respect an improvement might be effected. Writing as first taught takes the form of print script, but the traditional cursive writing is also taught in the Infants' course. The definite teaching of old style cursive writing ought not to be regarded as necessary; but if such a change is made, it should be deferred to a period of school life much later than the Infants' Department.

Report by HMI Miss F Tann
This school continues to be conducted in a thoughtful and conscientious manner. In spite of having permanent charge of a class, the Head Mistress supervises her school well.
There is a tendency to be over anxious about results in the formal subjects, and this tendency is reflected in the timetable, and in the practice of reserving the individual exercises in Number and Reading ( some of which are very attractively prepared) for the afternoon periods. The children are very responsive to the teacher's efforts and there is every reason to believe that the older children will be well prepared for the upper departments at the end of the school year. The small sections of backward children in each class receive careful attention.
Some suggestions were made to the Head Mistress in regard to a more attractive approach to Reading for the youngest children. It was also suggested that the time allowed to each class for Speech Training might be more valuable if it were split up into a short period every day.
Since the last Report the cursive form of Handwriting has been given up and it is pleasing to note that a very good standard is attained in print-script.
There is a little specialisation in Music as some teachers are more gifted on this side than others. The children sing in a very pleasing manner and are also receiving some training in rhythmic movement.
9.4.34 8 boys promoted to the Boys Dept. 2 Girls promoted to the Girls Dept.
29.5.34 The Medical Examination of the children by the School Medical Medical Officer commenced this morning.

12.7.39 Report by HMI Miss F M Tann
1 Premises.
The hall is rather small and a small playground has to accomodate the children from the girls' and infants' departments.
2. Instruction.
The children are bright and cheerful, friendly and communicative and most of them are well above average in native ability. The general attainments in each class reach a good level, the work in the highest and lowest classes standing well out. Although many of the lessons in Reading are based on a phonetic system the teaching is good and the clearness and fluency of the older children are to be commended. The children in the higher classes are quick and accurate in the Number lessons. In some parts of the school double - line ruling is used in the Writing lessons. It is understood that arrangements are being made to get all written exercises worked on single lines. There have been successful attempts to modernise the teaching in Art and Handwork. The children are keen and active in the Singing, Dancing and Rhythm lessons. A good stock of sense training apparatus has been acquired for the entrants' class and many novel activities of a practical nature have been introduced into the training. More toys are required in this part of the school.

23.11.49 Report by H.M Inspectors
Inspected on 12th and 14th July, 1949
The same Head Mistress is in charge of the Department, as when it was last reported on in 1939. As was then implied, the premises are not ideal for Infant work, where more space is needed for movement, especially in wet weather.
What was said in the previous report is equally applicable now. There is a pleasant and friendly atmosphere and the children are easily controlled without the imposition of a rigid system. The Head Mistress had kept abreast of modern methods and the general scheme of training is well balanced. By the time they pass out of the top class at the age of about seven and a half most children read well, write nicely and have a sound sense of number within the limits attempted. In all classes teachers made good use of instructional apparatus, much of it made by themselves. The Admission Class are well supplied with sense training material and toys, but some should be replaced on hygienic grounds. A full day is a long stretch for children of this age; they are not given an opportunity of a rest period, which is usually made available for the youngest children in schools.
Throughout attention is paid to speech training and in all classes it was clear that the children very much enjoy saying and acting poems. They also derive pleasure from singing, dancing and free activities.
The staff work conscientiously and in most cases make their rooms attractive with pictures and flowers.

18.4.55 Report received from Miss Bellinger and Mr Nightingale, County Inspectors.
There are 138 children on the roll in this Infant school taught in 4 classes, one class being in charge of the Head Teacher.
The Head Mistress and her staff take much care and thought over the welfare and progress of their pupils and real effort has been made to introduce much more modern material and apparatus into the school. Special commendation should be given to the amount and variety of media collected for constructive activity and the careful records of progress that are kept. The wisdom of introducing new methods throughout the school is doubtful and has resulted in some measure in a slowing down in the rate of progress of the older pupils. As the new schemes, begun in the entrants class are developed throughout the school, in subsequent years a more accurate grading and satisfactory progress should be established. The reading in the top class is thoroughly taught but the children could do with little effort, progress more quickly at this stage. The same applies to number and writing. More free writing should be introduced as early as possible.
The children enjoy music and physical education, are friendly and responsive, are happy to discuss their work with strangers and are receiving a sound social training.
The staff work happily together and with the children, in a calm but bright atmosphere. The Headmistress has given considerable thought to methods of teaching and has made a good beginning with freer methods, and an attempt is being made to allow the children to work at their own pace and develop their own ideas.
The problem remaining to be solved is how to present a greater challenge to these children. Many of the pupils in the top class of the school are capable of a higher standard of work than is at present being attempted. The Headmistress is aware of this problem and there is every reason to believe that a desirable standard will be attained.
18.4.55 Roll = 161. Staff = Head Teacher and 3 Assistants.
