Health literacy competencies are of key importance in all health care professions, since all of them involve interaction with clients with various level of HL. Moreover, in clinical settings the different health care specialists work together in interprofessional teams, which requires a common understanding of HL (interprofessional rehabilitation teams). Commonly, the education of physiotherapists, nurses, occupational therapists, nutritionists and midwifery specialists has a modular structure and takes place at a common department of Health Sciences, which facilitates the integration of the developed contents in the corresponding curriculum and enables close educational exchange. This exchange facilitates the transfer of the developed in HELPE educational materials for physiotherapy to other health care studies (e.g. nursing, occupational and speech therapy, nutritional sciences, midwifery, health and social services, rehabilitation counselling studies), as well as for medical studies.
Finally, a common aim of all health care professionals is to empower the client. This includes better adherence and compliance, confidence in the therapist, improved understanding of the therapy process, better self-management of own health, and adequate use of digital health-related information. This common aim determines the importance of developing high quality HL skills in the health care students through integration of high standard HL contents in the curriculum and their implementation during the clinical practice training. Examples for implication of the didactic materials are provided bellow.
