Core Subjects

English & Advanced English

In Year 9 English, students will learn and develop their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will analyse both written and visual texts and form their own interpretations after reading and viewing a variety of novels, informative pieces, persuasive texts and films. Students will learn how to analyse the structure, characterisation, themes and author's message of written and visual texts. They will look at current events in the media and analyse the impact that different pieces of writing have on a person's view of events. Students will learn how to write and speak in analytical, persuasive and creative ways. 

Mathematics-Core 

Advanced Mathematics 

This subject is offered as part of the Excellence and Enrichment program and is for students seeking challenge and extension in mathematics. There will be only one class of this subject offered at Year 9 and to access it, students will need to demonstrate the required capacity to achieve at high levels in this subject. The class will cover topics from the Victorian Curriculum with a view to extending students to potentially meet the requirements of level 10 Mathematics, where possible, by the end of the year. This then provides students with an opportunity to further accelerate their learning in Year 10 to study a VCE mathematics subject. 

Mathematics 

The Year 9 Mathematics curriculum follows the guidance provided by the Victorian Curriculum and exposes students to a wide range of mathematical ideas, concepts and skills. Students will further develop their confidence and competence in understanding mathematical ideas, concepts and skills and apply these to both real life and abstract contexts. The subject covers the six strands of the Victorian Curriculum Mathematics of Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics, and Probability.

Humanities


This subject will further extend students’ research skills and understanding in History and begin to prepare students who wish to undertake History in senior school. This unit focuses on topics such as The Industrial Revolution, Indigenous Resistance, Making a Nation, and World War one. Throughout these topics students will not only develop a thorough understanding of historical periods, but will further enhance their primary source analysis skills and progress in essay their essay writing.


Bilingual Humanities


This subject will further extend students’ research skills and understanding in Humanities by delivering the Year 9 Core subject through the target language of German. This subject will further extend students’ research skills and understanding in History and begin to prepare students who wish to undertake History in senior school. Pathway: Year 10 History, Year 10 German

Science

Science at Year 9 encourages students to become scientific detectives by promoting curiosity and questioning in the world around them.  Science provides opportunities for students to develop skills in predicting, designing, observing and collecting, analysing and drawing conclusions.  Students will have the chance to explore the units of light, consumer science, chemistry, acids and bases, responding and ecosystems. They will be given opportunity to make a solar reflector, dissect a bull's eye and grow a plant through a maze. 

Physical Education

This course aims to promote active involvement in physical activity and the important role it plays in improving health and wellbeing. Students will participate in a wide range of recreation and fitness activities that promote lifelong physical activity and health gains. The practical element of this subject involves skill development activities, minor game activities and formal competitions. During all activities, the major focus will be on active participation, enjoyment and self-improvement; and will be conducted in a positive and relaxed environment to ensure all students are stretched to their ability. The theory components of this unit focus on the human body systems, game play analysis, strength and conditioning programs and fitness testing. The theory components provide students with a base knowledge of key skills and terminology in preparation for Year 10 Physical Education, Year

10 Health and Wellbeing, and into future studies in VCE Physical Education at Years 11&12.
