Providing quality childcare is a lot of work. I feel privileged to be able to care for your child, and I want parents to feel privileged too, knowing all that I do to provide a quality program for their child. The following paragraphs give you a rough idea of how I spend my day, both during and outside of childcare hours.
It is my responsibility to properly prepare for each day of operation. This includes: lesson planning; arranging for field trips & guest speakers/visitors at our daycare; room set up and preparation of materials for the day’s activities; setting up room decorations; preparing flannel stories & selecting books; making flash cards; making toys; and cutting out, sorting, or copying craft and activity pages. Daily preparation also includes menu planning and food preparation, and clean-up for the playroom, toys, dishes, kitchen, bathrooms, & bedding to meet state sanitation guidelines. I spend a lot of time disinfecting toys and everything the kids touch in my home! I shop for daycare supplies, toys, books, art supplies, curriculum materials and food for daycare. I cook, feed, clean up and shop for an average of 6 kids every single day. I change and help toilet children a minimum of at least 36 times every single day. I lift children on and off the changing table and in and out of the crib a minimum of at least 42-50 times every day. I maintain the sidewalk and driveway during winter, maintain the outside play area, deck, fence, swing-set, climbers, and riding toys so that they are safe and clean for children to play on.
In addition, I am responsible for all of the office work for the business. This consists of: monthly calendar; daily attendance; food program menus, attendance, & enrollment forms; payment of utilities; saving, sorting, marking, and entering of receipts for tax purposes. Tax statements for all families and multiple reports for my tax preparer must be made ready and distributed. All bookkeeping for Gummy Bears’ Daycare & Learning Center must also be kept current, including parent receipts, monthly balance sheets, year-end statements, quarterly taxes and year-end taxes, and projected yearly budget.
Each year, I complete no less than 12 hours of continuing education hours. I read multiple Parent and Family magazines and newsletters in order to get new ideas for activities with the children and keep up on best practices. I scan the web to make sure I am aware of new findings in early childhood development, early childhood education, and product recalls. I maintain First Aid & CPR certification, as well Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter training. I must also keep current records on the children in my daycare, myself, my substitute caregiver, all people living in my house, my home, my vehicle, and my pets, as required by state law.
I am responsible for establishing an on-going dialogue with parents about their child and his/her progress at school. In order to ensure that each child has a happy, caring, fulfilling learning experience at Gummy Bears’ Daycare & Learning Center, I wear many hats. I am there for the child as a friend, role model, observer and nurturer, as well as a teacher. In addition to building relationships with each family, I am also responsible for establishing relationships between families by planning and holding school events for all families to attend such as summer picnics, holiday parties, and other group activities.
Finally, of all my required duties, my first and most important responsibility is to provide loving attention to all the children in my care. By completing all these responsibilities, I am able to provide a high quality childcare environment that I hope will be an enriching experience for both parents and kids!
