Othello is the younger half-brother of the notorious Burgan brigand, Beckett. Their father was a violent criminal who spent his life raiding and plundering until his death, leaving both brothers orphaned, disgraced, and marked by the reputation of their family name from birth.
Without guidance or opportunity, both brothers were drawn into a life of crime at a young age. However, the two developed very different outlooks on life. Beckett became willing to do whatever was necessary to survive, building a long list of violent crimes while secretly wishing he could have become a hero. Othello rejected much of his father’s cruelty and developed a stronger moral compass, though he still survives through theft, looting, and other small-time crimes.
Othello’s life changed after meeting Reks, a runaway noble who abandoned his birth family after saving Othello from a crime punishable by death. The two fled together and eventually became inseparable partners known as the “Lunar Scales.” Othello only survived because of Reks, which lead the two to place complete trust in one another above anyone else.
Othello and Reks first briefly appear during Chapter 13, where the pair rob a house before being spotted by Alouette. The White Lions later encounter them directly in Chapter 14, where the duo is accused of looting during riots caused by Beckett. After being apprehended, Boone can either advocate for their freedom or allow Alouette to send them to Illwish Island.
If Boone chooses to trust them, Othello and Reks later join the White Lions during the Burga arc. However, Othello’s flaws continue to surface, and the duo betrays the White Lions in Chapter 16 after being tempted by the wealth and corruption surrounding Burgan society. While much of the decision is driven by Othello, Reks ultimately follows him. Boone is once again given the opportunity to forgive them, leading to their permanent recruitment in Chapter 19: The Greater Good.
If Boone instead allows Othello and Reks to be sent to Illwish Island, Alouette eventually plays Jubir’s Drum and sacrifices the criminals imprisoned there for the sake of the world. The loss of spirit and aura caused by the Sacred Instrument leaves many consumed by malevolence, warping both mind and body. Othello is ultimately transformed into a lizardman.
Othello is charismatic, sharp-tongued, and morally conflicted, often masking his insecurities with confidence and humor. Growing up under the shadow of his violent father and notorious half-brother, Beckett, left Othello deeply distrustful of both authority and himself. Although he survives through theft and crime, Othello follows a personal code and avoids needless cruelty, often giving back to the poor alongside Reks as part of the Lunar Scales. His bond with Reks is the single most important relationship in his life, as Reks not only saved him from execution, but gave him a reason to believe he could become more than the man he was raised to be. Though transformed into a lizardman, Othello refuses to let his appearance define him, embracing his new form with characteristic confidence while continuing to fight for the people and ideals he believes in.
To recruit Othello after his transformation to a lizardman, Boone must speak to Alouette during Chapter 14 and choose “Advocate for the bandits.” This allows Othello to temporarily join in Chapter 15 before leaving prior to Chapter 16.
During Chapter 16, Boone must once again speak to Alouette and choose “Send to Illwish Island.” Just before Chapter 19, the White Lions will encounter Alouette again. Choose “Send Tiberius Away” to trigger the events later at Illwish Island.
Finally, on Chapter 23: Illwish Island, talk with Othello or Reks using Boone while holding a Red Plume. Othello and Reks join at the end of the chapter.
Starting Class: Lizardman (Axe / Wind)
Othello is the game's only playable lizardman, making him one of the most unique units in the roster. Despite his monstrous appearance, he fills a role similar to the other "axe bros," alongside Caspian, Silvan, Riley, Beckett, and Ezra. Compared to the other axe users, Othello stands out for his exceptional bulk. His Defense is comparable to armor knights while still maintaining strong Speed and an enormous Power stat. This gives Othello a unique role as a front-line bruiser capable of both taking and dealing heavy damage. Othello's excellent Strength allows him to reliably one-round many enemies, especially lance users due to the weapon triangle advantage improving his shaky hit rates. In addition to his physical prowess, Othello also has access to Wind magic, allowing him to target enemies with lower Resistance while retaining the raw physical power of axes.
Othello’s biggest weakness is his inconsistent accuracy. His low Dexterity and middling Luck can make axes unreliable at times, particularly against evasive enemies. Fortunately, access to Wind magic gives him a much more accurate alternative when accuracy is a concern. His Resistance is also noticeably higher than in his Warrior/Hero route, making him a more balanced front-line combatant despite the Lizardman class having a lower Defense cap. Fortunately, his excellent HP and respectable Speed make him difficult for the enemy to double attack. While Othello is not going to be landing critical hits consistently, he excels as a dependable front-line unit capable of holding chokepoints and absorbing physical attacks.
A unique aspect of Othello is his ability to use the Steal command due to his background as a thief. This allows him to function as a secondary utility unit capable of grabbing valuable enemy items, and his presence helps to reduce reliance on dedicated thieves like Atticus or Law.
Unlike his human route, Lizardman Othello cannot promote into Hero or access the Verdict Edge. Instead, he becomes one of only two characters capable of wielding the monster-exclusive Minos alongside Knox. Minos is an exceptionally accurate axe with brave propery and built-in critical chance, which gives Othello immediate access to the strongest monster-exclusive weapons in the game. His impressive Constitution also allows him to wield heavy tomes such as Excalibur without suffering any Speed penalty. This lets him capitalize on the +3 Speed bonus from Excalibur and gives Othello one of the highest practical Attack Speeds in the game while wielding a powerful magic weapon. Few enemies can withstand being doubled by a 17-Might tome backed by Othello's tremendous Power.
Overall, Othello is a highly dependable front-line unit who combines tremendous physical power with the versatility of Wind magic. While his fire weakness as a Lizardman can occasionally be exploited, Othello's combination of exceptional physical bulk, improved Resistance, powerful Wind magic, and exclusive access to Minos makes him one of the game's most versatile front-line combatants. His high Constitution allows him to excel with both axes and tomes, including wielding Excalibur without sacrificing Speed. Although Othello permanently joins even later on Chapter 23, he still has enough availability to become a major contributor throughout the late game. Rather than simply being an alternative version of Othello, his Lizardman route offers a distinct playstyle that rewards players with one of the game's most versatile physical/magical attackers.
Knox • Leah • Joseph• Silvan • Fletcher
Othello's lizardman form retains his tall, muscular physique, though his body is now covered in crimson scales with darker accents running along his limbs and back. His face has transformed into a reptilian snout lined with sharp teeth, while a dark mane of coarse, spiked hair runs from the top of his head down the back of his neck. His sharp eyes and confident posture remain largely unchanged. Othello continues to wear practical, lightweight clothing suited for agility, with his signature red color scheme carrying over into his transformed design. Though his appearance is fearsome, traces of the relaxed confidence and charisma that defined him as a human are still evident.
Othello is one of the few non-thief units in the game capable of using the Steal command.
During Part 2 of the game, Othello is one of the few playable characters capable of temporarily joining, leaving the party, and later returning permanently. The others are Reks, Euphemia, and conditionally Shane or Tarin.
Othello is the only playable lizardman in the game. Although several characters transform into monsters throughout the story, he is one of only six playable characters with a monster form, alongside Law, Knox, Reks, Tiberius, and Ozias.
Othello is one of the only characters in the game whose support conversations can change depending on story choices made by the player.
Othello is tied for the 4th highest Defense growth in the game despite not being an armored unit. Only Lionel, Grant, and Electra have higher Defense growths.
