Greening Denmead is delighted to be working with Denmead Parish Council to restore the much-loved willow dome and maze on Harvest Field (opposite the Harvest Home)—one of the village’s most distinctive natural features.
You may already have spotted our volunteers at work. We’ve begun a programme of careful maintenance to rejuvenate the structure, improve its shape, and encourage healthy new growth. This will help keep the dome an enjoyable space for residents while supporting local wildlife.
Over the coming months, the project will include pruning, replanting new willow canes, and strengthening the overall structure. By next spring, we hope to see a more vibrant, welcoming, and resilient feature for everyone to enjoy.
Sustainability is at the heart of the project. Willow cuttings are being reused for fencing in the Community Garden, chipped material is supporting the Wildlife Garden biodigester, and leaves are being composted to enrich the soil. We’re also using some of the finer stems for nature-inspired crafts and hope to involve skilled willow weavers in the future.
The willow dome is an important space for play, relaxation, and connection with nature. Its restoration reflects Greening Denmead’s commitment to enhancing local green spaces, supporting biodiversity, and bringing the community together.
Ann Nicholls the project lead said: "we are delighted that the Parish Council are supporting us in bringing back to life this much loved feature of Denmead and look forward to further successful projects together"
Our main maintenance period runs from mid-April for around 6–8 weeks, with further seasonal work planned throughout the year. Volunteers are always welcome—no experience needed.
Come and be part of the project! Whether you can spare an hour or a morning, your help will make a real difference. Bring sturdy footwear, gloves if you have them, and plenty of enthusiasm.
