Waste Prevention
Our Waste Prevention group wants to encourage everyone in Denmead to think about waste, and consider how many things they throw away. Our ultimate aim is to halve the amount of waste that goes into our bins - and see less litter in the parks and on our streets.
Waste quiz trail
Follow our family-friendly Waste Trail around King George V Playing Field on Saturday 27 April 2024.
The aim of this is to get people to think about waste, how they generate it, and how to reduce it. The waste trail will include a set of Boards placed around the village, with a question on each. Collect a quiz sheet from the Greening Denmead stalls outside the shops, write down your answers and hand them back at the end of the trail.
If you missed it don't worry, we aim to run it again later in the year.
Waste diary
Once you’ve completed the trail, you’ll receive a waste diary, where you can record what you throw away for a week. Please drop off your completed waste diaries to Pearsons Estate Agents in Denmead.
New waste prevention projects
We’re lucky that Denmead has a lot going on already to try and reduce waste. The Repair Cafe helps you to fix, rather than ditch your items, Free in Denmead on Facebook lets you give things a new home, plus Denmead Scouts run a Recycling Centre and clothes swap events.
Greening Denmead is hoping to fill in the gaps and set up new projects, such as:
A Toy Library to hold a stock of games and toys, which can be borrowed and returned. This keeps children entertained with ‘new’ toys and saves parents money, and space!
Reusable Nappy Library to give parents the option to ‘try before they buy' as well as offer help and advice in using reusables. With each baby using an estimated 4,000 nappies by the age of two and a half, this is a great project to reduce waste.
Swap Events to help people to reuse their unwanted clothes and other items and find ‘new’ things for themselves. The Scouts already run a popular ‘Swishing’ event for clothes. What other items do you think we could swap as a community?
If you have any other ideas for projects to prevent waste, please get in touch.
