The footplate union ASLEF declared a strike which lasted 17 days from 28 May to 14 June 1955,their aim being to restore the pre-war levels of pay differentials, causing a National Emergency to be decreed by the UK Government. The GRS had this article on local services during the strike.

I have a recollection that the Cheltenham - Kingham service ran with an ex-GW diesel railcar during this period, in lieu of engine and coaches, possibly as the driver was an NUR - National Union of Railwaymen - member.
