Gloucester Horton Road Fireman - 1964

After an absence since 1960 Small Prairie tanks made a welcome comeback in 1963/64 having been a feature of the Gloucester and Cheltenham area from the 1930s. Jim fired 4564 in January 1964, recalling it as a 'good steaming little engine'. This depicts the loco at Malvern Road shed on 12 October 1963, shortly before closure.

As well as the Honeybourne line, ex GW locos were used on trains on the ex-Midland line through Ashchurch as shown here with a Collett 38XX 2-8-0 at Lansdown Junction, Cheltenham, approaching lansdown station with a freight. Jim fired 3810 on a Llandarcy - Rowley Regis working in March 1964 which took this route.

We had many varied turns and in 1964 this increased with the closure of Barnwood in May and the two depots turns amalgamated.

This was the last year of intensive steam workings in Gloucestershire.

7-1-64 through to 10-1-64

Small Prairie tank 4564 light engine to Cheltenham St James for the 7.5 Paddington express. Then 8.5 Gloucester New Yard - St James goods, back to Gloucester Central with the 11.55 Paddington passenger. A good steaming little engine.

Horton Road and Malvern Road in GWR days and in B R days up to 1960 always had an allocation of Small Prairie 2-6-2T. Then they went elsewhere, but in September 1963, 4564 and 5518 were allocated to Horton Road. 4564 had been there in earlier years too. 5545 also turned up in June 1964.

The first week of February was spent on the Brimscombe banker with 4100. A busy time, banked three freights every afternoon and piloted the South Wales Parcels to Kemble every day. Also had to clean the fire and coal up as required.

Passenger and parcels trains up Sapperton had the Brimscombe loco in front of the train engine, while freights had the banker in its place at the rear.

92137 -Stoke Gifford.

24-2-1964

45598 on 5E09 Neath-March freight via Worcester to Birmingham Landor St, my first trip over the Lickey Incline.

45598 was one of a big batch of 'Jubilees' which were transferred to Burton -on-Trent loco shed in late 1961. They had plenty of duties through Gloucester, working freight, parcels and passengers, including deputising for diesels on class 1 expresses.

The first week in March was spent on Forest of Dean jobs with various panniers - 3737,4698,3745,4614.

7-3-1964

5096 Cardiff - Gloucester Docks Branch (should have been Leamington).

5096 was a Cardiff based loco, probably working out its mileage as it was withdrawn from service in June 1964.

Week commencing 16th March - demolition train between Ashchurch and Beckford on the branch to Evesham with the following: 7307, 9620, 4698 and 5518.

The line between Ashchurch and Evesham lost its passenger service in June 1963, with through freights being diverted to other lines in September 1963. A stub remained at Ashchurch to serve the Ministry of Defence depot (and is still in place in 2021, though trains are very rare.)

Having completed my first year as a fireman I now started in link 6 which had better weeks work. I now had a Mate who was a Cornishman and wasn’t as helpful as Harold, I only saw him on night turns as he swopped the day jobs with other drivers for the extra shift payments.

30-4-1964

5976 Over Sidings - Yarnton, Oxford via Honeybourne (where train reversed).

After closure of Gloucester Barnwood loco depot in May 1964, there were more footplate turns for Jim on the route to Bromsgrove and Birmingham with LMS locos, often Stanier 8F 2-8-0s, like 48434 on a down freight at Ashchurch. On the right is the Evesham branch, with track removed from the platform line. Jim worked several locos hauling track lifting trains on the branch.

As from 4 May 1964 the ex LMS depot at Barnwood closed and its work was amalgamated with Horton Road. This caused absolute chaos as we had drivers rostered to links where they didn’t know the road, they brought their engines with them and apart from the B R Standard 5 4-6-0s the others were mostly broken down 4F 0-6-0s.

At this time the big British Nylon Spinners factory at Brockworth were recruiting and quite a few firemen left to go there. A few of the old hand drivers took retirement and this meant link promotions for all - a lot of the senior passed firemen became drivers and overtime was as much as you wanted.

I was posted in Link 8 with driver Ray Matthews, a Gloucester GWR man, who was an easy to get on with sort of bloke. Instead of all the Honeybourne turns we now went to Bromsgrove and Birmingham on the Midland route and the Midland branches in Gloucestershire.

WD 2-8-0 90471 (41D) with Passed Fireman Dave Browning on a Cheltenham -Andoversford track demolition train. Threw a few big lumps of coal off at Mum's house as we passed!! The loco had previously been at 85B for ages awaiting repair.

This section of line closed in October 1962 when passenger and freight between Cheltenham and Kingham was withdrawn. Before that trains using the ex-MSJWR line between Andoversford and Andover had gone in September 1961. (By the way, this was before Dr Beeching did his stuff, so these closures were not part of the oft-quoted 'Beeching Cuts')

WD 2-8-0s were sometimes used on the line in B R days, working a heavy daytime freight from Cheltenham High Street to Eastleigh, which needed a big engine to ascend the 1 in 60 gradient up to Andoversford. They were also seen during World War 2.

22-5-1964

6346 with passenger turns: 5.40 Gloucester – Cheltenham, 6.35 Cheltenham – Gloucester, then changed footplates for-

6394 7.0 Gloucester - Hereford and 10.35 back.

A variety of engines worked on Gloucester – Cheltenham St James passengers, not only tank locos but tender engines including named locos such as 'Castles' and 'Halls', also B R Standards plus Diesel Hydraulic locos such as 'Hymeks'. On 2-6-64 the up 'Cheltenham Spa Express' was hauled from Gloucester to Cheltenham by 4F 0-6-0 43887, one of those 'broken down' engines transferred from Barnwood!

Gloucester – Hereford passengers also saw variety, including a regular B R Standard 80XXX 2-6-4T working.

26-5-1964

1444 on Chalford auto trains. This was my first trip on the auto, a bit wary at first being on my own on the engine returning to Gloucester, we never had the regulator coupled up so the fireman did all the driving on the return trip. I was a bit worried about stopping at the halts but managed ok. Seemed very strange going along through Haresfield at sixty plus miles an hour on your own in the cab. I think I was lucky that day as 1444 was a great little engine and I had a great top link driver with me.

29-6-1964 to 3-7-1964 'This week was the most enjoyable of my railway career.'

I was on the Chalford Auto with Driver Bob Sheppard, who in my opinion was one of the best mates one could have. We travelled to Stroud and then worked the 4/55 to Brimscombe, 5/15 to Gloucester, 6/22 to Chalford, 7/10 to Gloucester and the 9/30 to Chalford, then light engine to 85B.

We had 1472 on Monday, it didn’t steam too well being in need of a washout, but for the rest of the week we had 1453 which was my favourite auto and she steamed and ran a treat. I drove on the 6/22 and Bob put the fire right so I didn’t have to fire on the way back , he was an expert with the blade.

Horton Road had plenty of turns on the Chalford auto trains. Jim comments that 1453 was his favourite 0-4-2 auto tank and here it is at Chalford waiting to propel its single car to Gloucester Central with numerous stops at stations and halts en route.

On the Friday 3 July I booked on for the Auto but was taken off and told to meet up with driver Harry Jones and travel to Derby to bring back 1V49 7/24 Sheffield-Newquay. I had worked with Harry before and he was also a good mate, he reckoned we would get a Peak diesel but I knew it would be steam.

When we arrived at Derby Harry went to Control to find out how our train was doing and I went to make a brew. When Harry returned he informed me it was an hour behind time and steam-hauled.

At about 9.30pm I heard the shrill LNER whistle and our train rolled in pulled by B1 61153 of 41D. We relieved the Sheffield crew, filled the tank and I started to put on some coal. That’s when I discovered the firehole flap wouldn’t stay open without putting something on it to hold it open. I opened the large firebox door and this also wouldn’t stay open, so Harry had to hold it open whilst I fired. We set off with a full boiler and she was blowing off. As we got going I started to fire and put the exhaust injector on,she was steaming fine but the water level was falling. I thought Harry was hammering her a bit and I asked him what cut off he was using, he said 45% and full regulator but he couldn’t get her to go any faster. I then put the live steam injector on and the water level held at ¾ full. I thought for a train of only nine coaches the engine was making hard work of it. We were only stopping at New Street so Harry wanted to pick up water on Wichnor troughs - this we did without any problem and we continued on to Birmingham. Whilst at New Street I filled the fire up with as much as I could get in there and brought the coal forward. I also checked the water in the tank and was surprised by how much we had used, there was no water at New Street and due to the heavy consumption we decided to stop at Bromsgrove to fill up.

On leaving New Street we really struggled up through the tunnels with Harry thrashing 61153 - she was steaming ok but heavy on coal and water, I thought we would have to put on steam descending the Lickey.

We stopped at Bromsgrove South to fill up and Harry shouted up to me to look at the first coach, the brake blocks were bright red. We had pulled this from Derby with the brakes on!! The guard came down and we got all the passengers out into the next coaches and put the defective coach in the siding.

Whilst all this was going on 61153 was blowing off so when we started off we didn’t have a lot of water in the boiler,I put the exhaust injector on and only had to lightly fire her the rest of the way. We were now going at express speed.

We arrived at Gloucester an hour and half late but nobody was bothered.

I must say 61153 steamed fine and had a comfortable seat (when I had time to sit on it). But the other controls etc were a poor job compared to Western engines (I’m biased).

Jim fired 'B1' 61153 from Derby to Gloucester on 3 July. It returned  north with 1N48 9am Paignton - Leeds  the day after, while two other 'B1' s were around that Friday/Saturday - 61315 and 61167. A week later 61153 is seen heading through Churchdown station on 1E68 12.5pm Weston-Super-Mare to Sheffield..Photo Robin Stanton

The loco certainly looks run down, which was Jim's opinion of them at that time.

My mate tried to get the engine changed at Gloucester for a 63xx Mogul to save going to Canton to turn, as with a Mogul we could have gone round Barry Docks to turn. Our foreman told him we didn’t have any Moguls fit for a job like that any more - I was glad we didn’t, Hereford was enough for the surviving ones we had.
