In 1894, the GWR built a new station at St James' Square to replace the broad gauge one dating from 1847.
This article appeared in the 'GWR Magazine' for October 1894, with pictures by local photographer Mr J Holloway*.
The building contractor was also local, Mr C F A Horton.
The original St James station site as shown on an 1880s OS map. The original Cheltenham GWR loco shed at bottom left was removed to allow the Honeybourne route to make connection with the St James line.
The new station of 1894 is closer to St James Square and the number of tracks has been increased. The goods shed has been relocated. And there is a new loco turntable. The Honeybourne line is also shown on the left.

* Jesse Holloway had his photographic studio at Rostrevor House, 32 Cambray Place, Cheltenham from about 1887.
He died in 1896, but his family carried on the business and it was still listed in Kelly's Directory in 1914.
