The Gloucestershire Railway Society was instrumental in getting 'Castle' 4-6-0 5017 'St Donat's Castle' renamed as 'The Gloucestershire Regiment, 28th, 61st'. The loco had been shedded at 85B Gloucester Horton Road since November 1951.

5017's days were numbered when diesel hydraulics started working between Paddington and Gloucester. This scene at Kemble on 24 February 1962 shows the transition has started with 5017 arriving from London with a down express and D7001 heading to Swindon on a stopping train. Photo Ben Brooksbank.
With Diesel hydraulics fully taking over Cheltenham - Paddington services in September 1962, the loco was withdrawn later in the month and broken up at Cashmores, Newport that December - though at least the nameplates survived.
