A works train on the up relief at Hatherley box unloads track materials for relaying with long welded rails. Trains were probably still using the two down lines whilst work was in progress on the up side. Photo R Stanton
A ballast train stands on the up main, probably in connection with laying the long welded rails. The loco is 2-6-2T 4163 shedded at Gloucester Horton Road from January 1961 until withdrawal in October 1962. Benhall Estate houses are being built on the field opposite the box. Photo R Stanton
The up main was relaid with long-welded rails on 1 November 1964 when 44805, 76085 and 92244 were on the engineering trains in attendance.

There was a drainage problem at Hatherley on the down side for some years and both down lines had a speed restriction which terminated here as denoted by the 'T' signs. 45598 'Basutoland' heads up the main with a mineral train.
