Lauryn Hill is an American rapper and one of the gretatest artists of all time. Hill's musicial sound is fascinating, "Hill's sound, often categorized as “neo-soul,” bridged hip-hop and mainstream popular music. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was also notable for its deeply personal lyrics, which addressed such themes as the meaning of self, family, and community". She is a very influential artists and I love her sound combining her ancestral African roots with the modernisation of the 1990s. She has achieved major success within The Fugees and her solo career
Lauryn Hill paved the way for modern R&B musicians, beginning in the 1990s along with the Hip-Hop movement. Her Baptist family moved to New York for a short period before settling in South Orange. Hill has said of her musically oriented family: "There were so many records, so much music constantly being played. My mother played the piano, my father sang, and we were always surrounded by music."
Being surrounded by music at a young age inspired her to take it on as a career. "She spent hours on end listening to records in her room, absorbing the classic soul music of the ’60s and ’70s. She performed at every opportunity; at age 13 she appeared as a contestant on Showtime at the Apollo. With the support of her parents, she pursued singing and acting professionally in her early teens, appearing on local television and auditioning for film roles in nearby New York City".
The group released two albums within the 90s decade. Their first being 'Blunted on Reality was released in 1994 and was the band's debut.
Then later in the decade their second album 'The Score' was their most popular album, featuring cover songs 'No Woman No Cry' and 'Killing Me Softly'. The track Killing Me Softly, as the band took a track that was released in the 1970s and modernised it into a Hip-Hop classic.
Famously, Hill was a part of the Hip Hop group The Fugees, who were popular in the 1990s. Lauryn Hill and Pras first met at Columbia High School, in Maplewood, New Jersey. Pras, Lauryn, and a mutual friend Marcy Harriell formed a musical trio called Tyme; Pras' cousin, Wyclef Jean, joined the line-up and Marcy left soon afterward, in 1990.
The following video goes into detail about the band's successes but it also what pulled them apart.
Lauryn Hill was a high achieving young artists who paved a way for neo-sould artists.
Hill has achieved many awards for her one album 'The MissEducation of Lauryn Hill' in 1999, these include:
Grammy Award for Album of The Year
Grammy Award for Best R&B Album
Grammy for Best New Artist
Grammy Award for Bet R&B
MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year
MTV Video Music Award for Best R&B Video
MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video
Soul/R&B New Artist
Lauryn Hill's inspirations included the reggae icon Bob Marley, "Marley was featured on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. This collaboration completely changed Hill’s direction with her music. She became a beacon of hope and truth for young people. She continued Marley’s mission, teaching youth the importance of love and harmony".
Hill's influence has inspired artists in the 2000s decade onwards, such as Amy Winehouse, Adele, Beyonce, H.E.R etc. This video demonstrates the effect Lauryn Hill's effect on 21st-century artists.
"A chameleonic album, it incorporates Hill’s powerful rap lyricism with her sultry soulful singing. From the massive bops of ‘Lost Ones’ and ‘Doo Wop (That Thing)’, all the way through the more meditative ‘To Zion’, Hill is operating on a higher level than ever before. Inspired by the same themes of universality her partner’s father's (Bob Marley) philosophy, Hill’s songs also bring a perspective on motherhood".
This article demonstrates the impact Hill's single "Doo-wop" had on women, as the track was about not following male accusations that a woman can't be a mum and have a successful career. In the music video, I like how this idea is portrayed in the opening image and the contrast between the decades of the 60s and 90s. How the expectations of women have changed as well for independence.
Within this blog, I will be going through the possible career paths, that I could follow after college and university. My instrument is the bass guitar and I would like my path to include working and collaborating with people around the world and building wider connections. I am not certain where my career may take me, but I know that music will be a part of it whether I end up with my future career. As previously shown in my blog, there are many job opportunities within the music industry that people can be a part of, I will be going through what career paths I would additionally like to go down.
Becoming a professional musician is a job I aspire to. The idea of performing in front of large amounts of people at festivals and concerts, I've always loved going and seeing musicians perform and it has always inspired me to hopefully do the same thing. Being a part of a band that becomes your musical family is important, creating and releasing music with them and then on a tour around the world. My path as follows, with being a part of the UAL course in Music Performance and Production. I am currently studying on this 2 year course, which is my first time studying music at a high level. My next path after college would involve going to university, and have already started looking at courses involving music and another subject, even though it is not essential to have a degree to be a professional musician. I really wnat to go to university for the connections that i will make with other musicians and being in a city broadening my knowlege in the music subject. I think its important to get the course correct, as as much as I want to learn the theoretical side of music as its highly important, I want to play amongst others. Most music universities will need you to perform an audition tape so that they can see your essential skills on your instrument, I have put together two videos of me playing a song and then a video on my alpeggios and scales on the bass.
Preparation and further training to become a professional musician is dedication and commitment. Therefore in my own training I will practise daily and use online teaching rescourses to remind or help me with placing and scales. The link I have used helps to break down ways to become a professional musician. There are many ways to become a musician and spreading your music around fr others to like and repost. Being amongst other people is crucial and a part of music societies and clubs at university and elsewhere. Networking is vital as opportunities are often discovered via word of mouth, and personal recommendations can sometimes lead to auditions. Its important to take any opportunity that arises to gain experience - by doing so, you'll build your confidence and professional network and extend your repertoire. Being a part of this course has been a starting platform for my future career. Within this couse we delve into spreading our music out to an audinece, we have created online social media accounts to share our origianl work. I find listening to professional musicians or someone I look up too's advice online about how they got into the industry and what tehniques and preparation they had or were given.
https://uk.indeed.com/career-advice/finding-a-job/how-to-become-musician
People join the music industry because it is their passion to achieve and work creatively. Building a network of musicians, like I said ealrier about building connetions is highly important and joining social groups to meet other aspiring artists. Communication is important skill to adapt when working with other people, being reliabily and available to events and gigs that may occur. I believe I definately have the skills of communication wit other people and makes sure that the group is not one-sided and all of us lead rehearsals. My relaibility involves me knowing my theory and songs i need to practise, this includes regularly practising my scales and adapt to playing different genres. I know I am a hardworking person and will try my best with whatever comes at me as a challenge
I can gain additional experience by volunteering and working amongst other people in the music industry, such as music producers to see how they professionally mix music. In my career pathway I would like to have experience in other parts of the industry that come together as building blocks to creating music and a future album. I think its important to have patience and allow time to learn new material, as well as having patience for other people who you may be working with, as writing and creating music takes time and can be a long process. Being ready and organised about what you need to do is vital, you can't be unready and slowing anyone else down. Working on time managing is also really important for me and so far at the start of my career I'm always working hard upon these skills and gaining further experience.
This is another job that I find fascinating, and would like to include in a potential career path. Music journalists must possess exceptional focus, discipline, and time management skills in order to craft quality prose while the clock is ticking. Being a music journalist involves you working with magazines, online publications and broadcast media outlets. This career is far different from wanting to be a professional musician, as being a journalist is working manly on your own and finding information then rather playing and being the subject written about.
My preparation for becoming a music journalist would be defiantly researching and doing extra reading on past articles such as Rolling Stones and NWE. Picking about what music journalists have said about particular artists upcoming album or live performance.
You do not necessarily need a degree to become a music journalist, but having a good understanding with English and that's why it may be important to have an A level or degree in English.
This video attached, gives examples of how people got into the music journalist business. For some of them, it was simply just starting to write a blog online about their favorite records and what they thought of them. It is empowering from a female point of view what inspired them to create their journalism path and how simple it can be. I found this definition of music journalism, which tells exactly what the job involves "Music journalists cover the world of music for print publications, online journals, magazines, and broadcast media outlets. They review concerts and new releases, report on the business of music, write artist profiles and feature stories, conduct interviews, and break music-related news".
I find myself liking to work with other people as part of a team. Most journalism involves working on your own to find sources. I enjoy that work involves going to see live music to tell your audience your views. I would begin my music jouralist by writing up a blog on the live music I watched last year, and talk about the bands perfromance and why i enjoy their music.
The skills you need to become a music journalist vary, one of the main skills would be researching and having patience. I find it important that researchers take time to look at different articles and build an opinion on what has been said by another journalist.
A website listed what it means to be a music journalist and what skills are needed "Music journalists must possess exceptional focus, discipline, and time management skills in order to craft quality prose while the clock is ticking. Those who conduct interviews as part of their job should cultivate a personable demeanor, as success often hinges on putting the subject at ease".
A way to achieve a music journalist position would be "Submitting reviews, entries, and letters to magazines, websites, and open-submission platforms is a great way of making your writing visible online and in print". Therefore for me to reach this job role I would contact companies such as the BBC for experience. Being shown around the studios and what involves creating a review.
