My background with music, both playing, and listening has varied across my life. I have been playing the bass for roughly 2 years, as I enjoy the sound and rhythm the instrument creates. My experience of performing and working with others includes playing at the bar in Totnes called the Barrel House, which allows young musicians to play with each other. It has given me great confidence to perform in front of others as well as enjoying it massively. Forming a band amongst that community, even though it is early days I enjoy discussing our plans with what we want to do next with our skills and to what distance do we want to go in our musician career.
I like to take inspiration from other female bassists and musicians, such as Tina Weymouth from 'Talking Heads' .
Weymouth said to Guitar World Magazine in 2022, "I was trying to pay attention to both melody and rhythm as a means to tie together the drums and for David's extremely bright, no mid-range guitar and vocals". Talking Heads were by no means releasing predictable music, but instead experimenting and creating unique and taboo music of its time. Weymouth's lack of formal musical experience was replaced by innate ability and passion.
Additionally, other female bassists such as Gail Ann Dorsey; who has performed and toured with different artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Tears for Fears' from 1994 to 1996, and David Bowie from 1995 to his death in 2016. Her style of playing broadly spans broadly from alternative rock, funk, country, and pop influences. https://pleasekillme.com/gail-ann-dorsey-bowie/
In this interview, Dorsey discusses her relationships with different musicians, how her career has expanded from the 1970s to the present day, and how her experiences have differed from working with different people.
