"Even chart-topping pop stars such as Beyoncé and Rihanna, who had first made their mark in R&B, had largely given up on the genre. Meanwhile, some of its biggest remaining stars – Usher, Kelly Rowland, and Jennifer Lopez – could only find success as the voices of EDM bangers, their soulful vocal tics ironed out by relentless David Guetta beats". The Times article records how R&B had made a comeback into contemporary music, from firstly being influenced by rhythm blues in the 40s, and has reaching popularity in new decades.

Emo and pop punk had a significant influence on alternative rock in the 2000s. Bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Panic! at the Disco gained massive popularity, blending catchy melodies with introspective and emotionally charged lyrics.
One band that was popular within the 2000s, was the American 3-piece Blink-182, who use the common chord progression C-G-AM-F. In the 1990s, Greenday used the same structure in their hit 'When I Come Around' in 1993. Blink-182 popularised the genre of pop punk and led the way for other artists to do the same. This progression was used in most of the band's tracks throughout the 200s including 'The Rock Show' and 'Feeling This'. Within the same genre Linkin Park had used the progression in their song 'Numb' that was released in 2003.

Joining the band
Within My Chemical Romance, Way was interviewed about his first experiences with the bass guitar "My first breakthrough with bass playing was during one of the first MCR practices in December of 2001. Gerard [Way, frontman] and Ray Toro [lead guitar] both coached me, as I hadn't had a great deal of bass experience up to that point. When I got the picking pattern/timing for [early MCR track] Our Lady of Sorrows down, I had a total 'wow' moment and knew not only did I love it, but I would play the bass forever."

The iconic song 'Uprising' has a distinctive guitar riff and a combination of electronic synths. I like the guitar riff as it gives the illusion that someone is shouting.
Playing in this style
Early Arctic Moneky songs are all quick and fast-paced, so it was important for me to break down the song and play it slowly and then build up my pace and play along to the song. I have played much alternative rock before, or when I have it was simple chord progressions. But this was an enjoyable challenge to play.
The track was released by The Arctic Monkeys in 2006, this song is highly energetic, with quick tempo on the drums and fast singing. The genre of their first album was alternative rock. This article explains the band's inspirations at an early age "As teenagers the whole band liked psychedelic scousers The Coral, while ideas about structure and form came from The Strokes and The Libertines – and through them, The Clash and The Jam. UK hip-hop legend Roots Manuva was a big inspiration, as was North London’s Braintax".

Rehearsing this song was enjoyable, I was quick to learn the fast bassline and the vocalists already knew the song. We haven't performed the song yet for our LPW, but I am confident it will go well. We haven't practiced it so much due to disruptions, but we all practice at home before coming together.
For our creative cover, we've decided to do 'Bad Gut' by Billie Eilish and turn it rock. We haven't specified what kind of rock it is going to be, whether it will be in the style of quick-paced Arctic Monkeys or more heavy like Linken Park.
Next session we are going to experiment with what sounds best, but for my part, I have an iconic bassline to play and it would be interesting if I played it faster and Ollie played down strokes on the guitar and Charlie drummed hard, but still having control of the drums.
