Quite often and incorrectly dubbed the "Mine Sweeper" outfit, this casual combination of a very short-sleeved, blue chambray work shirt and khaki chinos was work was worn on a trip to Angola, but not on Diana's famous walk through a cleared minefield*. While quite appropriate and practical, it wasn't the ultra chic, über elegant look to which Diana's following was accustomed.
There are 7 items in the outfit: blue shirt, khaki Capri length trousers, a brown vinyl belt, vinyl moccasins, tri-tone metal hoop earrings, sunglasses and a gold, cuff style wristwatch. At one time, it could be purchased dressed on a doll. which was neither special nor limited, just a normal "People's Princess."
Overall, the ensemble is quite authentic and very detailed. The trousers even have belt loops and a "fly" and the teeny tiny buttons on the shirt are incredibly to scale. The moccasins are built up inside to accommodate Diana's foot arch in a clever way that fakes flat shoes for a foot in solid high heel pose.
I was a bit disappointed not to have received the Red Cross lapel badge as part of the set, too, but it's a great outfit and there were likely trademark infringement and lawsuit fears at play, given that the Mint was already defending one for $4,000,000 from the Diana POW Fund.
A kind and inventive member of my doll club made one years ago for some of us, and an enterprising seller has posted some on eBay. They are easy enough to produce at home using photo-imaging software, a colour photo printer and a laminator. My suggestion if you wish to do this (especially using this graphic) is that you make a donation to the British Red Cross, because you are, after all, infringing on their trademark. It's the right thing to do and should even up karma in your favour a bit and Diana supported this cause.
Some other good casual outfits in a similar style would be the pink, white or blue Oxford shirts worn on a trip around the same period to Kosovo and Angola with black or stone washed jeans. Although I prefer the glitter and glamour of tiaras and formal wear, I'm not averse to my dolls having a variety of looks because they all make up a part of how Diana equipped herself through her life journey.
*Diana actually wore yellowish buff chinos and a white Ralph Lauren Polo oxford shirt on her minesweeper walk, as well as a Halo Trust face protector and kevlar body shield. I bought the two pieces of equipment secondary market, not realising how easy the face mask would be to make from an empty Evian bottle. The next plan is to try using an extra pair of the trousers as a pattern for the buff chinos, jeans and other trousers worn on trips to Angola and Bosnia.
