FIU Coronavirus Advisory – Visit our Panthers Protecting Panthers website for updates
Congratulations! You are approaching the end of your G1Y program and are almost ready to progress to FIU as a degree-seeking sophomore. Check out the important information below that will help you to be prepared for what comes next.
A minimum GPA of 2.0
A passing grade in a math course
A passing grade in ENC 1101
An SAT/ACT score
Progression Form - The application for progression that collects information for FIU Admissions. This is always the first step you will need to take in the document completion process.
Declaration and Certification of Finances (DCF) - The DCF is a document that you will fill out to provide the university with complete and accurate information about the funds available to you as an international student. This financial verification is required of any student at a university applying for a new I-20. Watch this video for instructions on how to complete your Declaration and Certification of Finances (DCF)
Bank Statement or Financial Guarantee - A bank statement proves to U.S. immigration that you have the funds necessary to pursue an education in the United States.. If you are a sponsored student, such as from Oman or UAE, you will need a new Financial Guarantee from your sponsor to submit to G1Y. This document will work in place of your bank statement.
Before beginning enrollment, review the holds on the Task tile on your MyFIU dashboard and follow the instructions on the hold to have it removed. Most holds can be solved by submitting the necessary documents online. See below for some advice on removing common registration holds.
If you have a hold related to advising you will need to make an appointment with your advisor via the Panther Success Network system.
According to Florida Board of Governors and FIU policy, all International Students with F and J status, who are planning to study in the United States, are required to have medical insurance prior to registration. Proof must be submitted to the Health Compliance Office at the Student Academic Success Center (SASC Lobby), or emailed to insurance@fiu.edu.
Students will receive an "IMI" insurance hold on their student account. Students will not be allowed to register for classes or continue enrollment without complying with the medical insurance requirement. There are no exceptions to this rule.
The medical insurance requirement can be met in one of three ways:
By renewing your FIU Global First Year Insurance
By purchasing the FIU Sponsored Health Insurance Plan
By choosing an alternate FIU approved insurance plan and submitting an International Student Alternative Health Insurance Compliance Form completed by that insurance company
Please be aware that there is a 24-48 hrs. processing time during weekdays for all incoming documents. To check the status of your hold, you may log on to your MyFIU Account.
For students with insurance coverage through their government’s embassy, the only acceptable document for compliance with insurance requirements is the FIU Alternative Insurance Compliance Form, which must be completed by an embassy representative for the current term(s).
NOTE: If you will not be in the United States during a semester, you must contact G1Y or ISSS for instructions on how to report that you will be out of the country. Once the information is recorded, the system will remove your insurance hold. It is very important that you follow these instructions. NO HOLDS WILL BE REMOVED WITHOUT STATUS UPDATES.
Holds can be removed by paying the underlying charge in full. Take the following steps to remove an account hold:
Log onto the my.fiu.edu.
Select Student Self Service.
Under Student Self Service, select Student Accounts.
Under Student Accounts, select View Your Account.
Locate the outstanding charge and submit a credit card payment. A convenience fee of 2% will be charged (i.e. if paying $1000, 2% x $1,000 = $20. $20 will be added to the transaction, and the total amount charged to the credit card will be $1,020).
Payment appears on the student's account 1 business day after payment is submitted (i.e. Friday payments will appear on Monday, payments made during a weekend or on a university holiday will appear the first business day after the holiday).
The hold associated with outstanding balance will be automatically removed 2 business day after the payment is submitted.
Holds can be modified to allow registration/drop/add for good cause shown. as determined by the department. Financial hardship, inability to pay, lack of knowledge of due dates are not considered good cause shown. Holds cannot be modified to allow release of transcripts or other educational records.
If an FIU parking citation is not paid or appealed within ten (10) days, a $5 late fee shall be assessed in addition to the fine established and a hold will be placed on the student's account. Removal for the hold will only occur when any outstanding balance is paid. Fines may be paid by credit card online through the FIU Parking Website or in person at the Department of Parking, Sustainability and Transportation by check, money order, cash, the FIU One Card, or credit card. Alternatively, payments may be mailed to the Department of Parking, Sustainability and Transportation located on Modesto A. Maidique Campus. All payments sent by mail should include the payee's Panther ID number if applicable, and citation number(s).
FIU's Student Conduct and Academic Integrity Office may place a student conduct hold on the records and registration of any student who has a pending Code matter, including any outstanding sanctions. Students may not be allowed to graduate or receive grades, until pending matter(s), including any outstanding sanctions have been resolved. If you see a Student Conduct hold on your account, you will need to contact the office at conduct@fiu.edu for next steps to remove your hold.
As part of our ongoing commitment to ensure a safe and healthy University community, all students admitted to FIU beginning Spring 2017 must complete the sexual assault prevention program. The program is completed fully online. New students who do not complete the program will have a registration hold placed on their student account that will prevent enrollment for future terms. To complete the training, please visit the websites listed below:
The good news is that after you finish the Global First Year program, you no longer have to pay up front for the whole year of tuition, housing, and dining. FIU will post your electronic bill online for your tuition after the class registration period has ended. If, for finance purposes, you need an estimate of your bill sooner, you can use FIU's Tuition Calculator to estimate your payment amount.
Your bill is available online through your MyFIU student center. Payment is due by the add/drop deadline for each semester. For instructions on how to pay, click HERE.
The best time to register is on your enrollment date. Currently enrolled degree-seeking students are given a time and day based on their classification and credit hours completed. Enrollment dates are earliest for graduate students then undergraduate students by earned credits in descending order (seniors first and freshmen last). After that, open registration begins and all degree-seeking students may register.
Classes fill up fast so pick classes early! Students can add or drop courses at any time between their enrollment date and the add/drop deadline without incurring fees so long as they are registered for a least 1 class before the first day of the semester.
To check your enrollment date, follow these steps:
Login to MyFIU.
Select 'Manage Classes,' then 'Enrollment.'
From the dropdown choose 'Enrollment Dates.' Keep in mind enrollment dates cannot be changed.
If you wish to live on campus after the Global First Year program has ended, you will need to be responsible for submitting your own housing application by the appropriate deadlines. All information about applying and submitting a housing agreement can be found on the FIU Housing Website.
