FIU Coronavirus Advisory – Visit our Panthers Protecting Panthers website for updates
Welcome to the Panther Family! Once you have received your acceptance letter and have paid your $2000 tuition deposit, you will need to complete Orientation.
Orientation is a program of fun and learning that is critical to your success as a G1Y student. You can expect to:
Take Math and English placement tests
Learn about academic policies and requirements
Get familiar with campus buildings/landmarks
Hear about resources and involvement opportunities
Make connections with other new students
Meet with an Academic Advisor to understand the classes you should be taking
Get registered for your first semester of classes
Whether you are completing your application or preparing for orientation, make sure you know the following important dates.
Global First Year has two different types of assessments that will occur before you start your program. (NOTE: Before you take the ALEKS or the PERT, you will need to make sure that you can log into your MyFIU account)
ALEKS Mathematics Assessment
(Note: take the ALEKS BEFORE orientation)
The ALEKS assessment tests your math level. This assessment is solely for students who intend to study in majors in Business, Science, Technology or Mathematics. Students can either place in College Algebra, Business Calculus, or Calculus I depending on their major math track. You will take this test BEFORE orientation.
Take some time now to familiarize yourself with the ALEKS Remote Instructions Tutorial. Please note that all students will be required to pay a $5 fee during orientation to sign up for the test. The link to take the ALEKS exam is: go.fiu.edu/aleksg1y
PERT - Reading and Writing Assessment (if applicable)
The PERT assessment covers your English reading and writing skills. If you are required to take the PERT, you must first do the steps to set up your FIU Account and university email. After you have successfully set up your FIU account, you will need to register for the PERT test in the FIU Testing Center's online system. Please click here for instructions on how to register for the PERT assessment. Once you have registered, you will receive an email from the University Testing Center with further testing instructions.
When you receive the email in your FIU university email, follow the instructions, watch the following video tutorial, and download HonorLock so that you are ready to take the PERT assessment.

Orientation is an important and mandatory part of your preparation to attend FIU. Missing even one day could result in you missing important information about your classes and may result in a delay in your registration. If you have an urgent situation that requires you to miss orientation, please contact Lukas.calafell@globalfiu.com
It is your responsibility to view the orientation sessions and complete all required tasks.
You will be registered the week after orientation once holds are removed and all of your placement results have been recorded. Once you have been registered, the Academic Director will send you an email for you to visit https://my.fiu.edu/ to view your course schedule.
It depends. Your class schedule will be based on your Major and assessments if these are required. To request any changes, please contact the Academic Director at lorna.baez@globalfiu.com
The last date to request for changes in your schedule for Fall 2021 is on August 20th before 5pm EST. To request any changes, please contact the Academic Director at lorna.baez@globalfiu.com
Courses will populate in Canvas the first day of class. In the Fall 2021, you will see the courses in Canvas on Monday, August 23rd. If you are having any issues with Canvas please contact the Canvas Support Team: https://canvas.fiu.edu/support/
Your class schedule will be visible on your MyFIU account. It will also be visible in your PantherSuccessNetwork via your MYFIU account.
Make sure that you carefully follow the steps on the MyFIU Account Setup Page. If you've followed all of the steps there and are still having trouble, most likely what you are experiencing is something that only FIU IT can fix. Please go to https://fiu.service-now.com/sp?id=sc_somethingbroken. On this page, you will need to scroll down and view the tab that says "Chat". In this tab, you can fill out information about the issue you are having. When you hit "Submit" you'll be immediately connected to an IT person from 8 AM to 8 PM EST, Monday through Friday that can help assist you. If you have an issue outside of these hours, please wait until the office is open again to submit your request. You may also call IT at +1 (305) 348-2284.
Your score shows the level of your math preparedness and as such will be used to register you in a class that you are likely to succeed in. If you take a class for which you don’t have required prerequisites, you will have a hard time passing it. ALEKS placement assessment evaluates your knowledge and indicates the class level that you can be successful in.
Consult the MPS and ALEKS Placement Table for the classes you can register for depending on the score and your intended major. Note: Scroll down to the second page of the document to see the ALEKS Placement Table.
Please note that a student with an SAT math score below 440 or an ACT math score below 19 must take the ALEKS assessment for math placement.
