QUEENSCLIFFE, September 26.

Mr. Henry Stokes, who fell dead in the fire at Emu Bay last week, was 90 years of age. He came out in 1836 in the ship Hartley, of which he was mate, and owing to a dispute with the captain left the ship at Kingscote, and settled there, after wards working for the South Australian Company and Mr. Calnan. Stokes Bay is named after him. After many years of hardship the deceased settled in Emu Bay with his wife, but their house caught fire, and he was left homeless. Kind friends soon built another house for them, but soon after this Mrs. Stokes died, and during the last few years Mr. Stokes had been living by himself on Government rations and the kindness of his neighbors, who used to visit him daily and attend to him in his old age."
