CAVESIDE PIONEERS

... Richard Warren, of Beaminster, Dorset, England left for Australia on 13th. June 1836 on the barque 'Africaine' which reached Kangaroo Island on 2nd. November 1836, and on 17th. November anchored in Holdfast Bay near Adelaide.

While they were at Kangaroo Island, Richard Warren was one of a party of five who attempted to walk across the Island. Two of the party lost their lives. Richard Warren is mentioned three times in Penelope Hop's book 'The voyage of the Africaine'. This book is still available in Libraries and on sale. Richard Warren and John Hope were among the first people to build dwellings in Adelaide. After a couple of years Richard left Adelaide and came to Tasmania. He was married at St. Leonards and later shifted to Longford and farmed at Esk Farm where all 10 of the family were born. Later they moved to Rockfield, Chudleigh which was called Kenn Mount at that time. He then had a house built at Caveside which is still known as Rosedale (and is still standing in ruins on property now owned by the Flowers family). The Warren family carried on dairy farming, milking 100 Devon cows by hand, and making butter and cheese. ... They stored the butter and cheese in the wet cave and when they had a load, took it to Launceston for sale. They travelled by bullock dray on a journey which took 2 days each way. There were no improved pastures to milk on but natural grasses were used, mainly Kangaroo Grass which made up the bulk of food for a number of years until the rabbit population eventually ate the country bare. Dairying came to an abrupt end when new methods of farming were necessary for the sake of economy, Cash crops were introduced with fodder crops for milking. Mrs. [Florence] Evans [only remaining grand-daughter of Richard] still lives on the property where she was born. Part of this property was owned by R. Warren and dairy farming is still carried on by her grandson John (the fifth generation), Her other grandson Phillip who was a student at Mole Creek, is now doing research work in cheddar cheese at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, and is also studying for his Masters in Agriculture at the same time.4
