1. Samuel STEPHENS was born ABT 1809 in England and died 18 Jan 1840 in Glen Osmund, SA. He married Charlotte Hudson BEARE 24 Sep 1836 in In the John Pirie, Nepean Bay. She was born 1788 in Winchester, England and died 16 Dec 1875 in Adelaide, SA, arriving on Barque DUKE OF YORK.

First Colonial Manager appointed by the South Australian Company to the new colony of South Australia. In 1839 he was appointed inaugural treasurer of the committee to found the Botanical and Horticultural Gardens.

He was killed on his return to Adelaide on the final downhill, from an expedition up the River Murray, when his horse stumbled and rolled over him.
