Obituary

THE LATE MR. J. F. THORN.

Of the pioneers who assisted Colonel Light and Captain Hindmarsh in the foundation of the colony only a few are left, and last week the little band was further reduced by the death of Mr. John Frank Thorn. Mr. Thorn had served under Colonel Light for many years in the service of Pasha Ali in Egypt. He was born in Exeter on April 27, 1812. His schooldays terminated with an incident, during which he flung a ruler at the master's head. He was then apprenticed to his uncle, who was by trade a glasscutter, but his inclinations were for a life on the ocean. He accordingly shipped on board H.M.S. Ringdove. In December, 1826, the vessel was ordered to North America, but he was unable to acompany her, being at the time in the Plymouth Hospital as the result of an accident. Upon recovery he joined the Britannia, and from thence he was selected among half a dozen other boys to join the Rifleman, an 18-gun brig, which was being fitted out for the Mediterranean. Nearly four years of his life were spent on this vessel, after which he returned to London in 1830. His next ship was the Sapphire, and subsequently he joined H.M.S. Nile, which was built tor Pasha Ali. Captain Hindmarsh and Colonel Light were on the same vessel. After Captain Hindmarsh left the Nile 12 of the crew, including Mr. Thorn, remained with Colonel Light. After six months he was promoted from A.B. to quartermaster.

One Monday morning Colonel Light sent for him, and said— "Thorn, I have been appointed Surveyor-General of South Australia." His reply was— "If you are going to leave, I will not stay here under this flag." Later on Thorn and two of his messmates, John Duncan and Charles Bradley, came to South Australia with the colonel.

An interesting relic of this time is in the possession of the family, consisting of a well-preserved piece of paper, on which is written in Colonel Light's hand: — "H.H. steamship Nile, Alexandria, November 2, 1835. This is to certify that John Thorn has served on board this ship from August 1, 1834, to November 2, 1835, the first five months as able seaman, then as quartermaster. I feel much pleasure in giving this testimony of the praiseworthy manner in which he conducted himself the whole of that period, and can recommend him strongly to any commander.— William Light, captain H.H. ship Nile. N.B.— He leaves this ship on account of my quitting the Pasha's service.— W.L. "

They arrived at Kangaroo Island on August 30, 1836, and after refitting the vessel there proceeded to Rapid Bay, where they anchored on September 2. The first boat that brought anyone ashore was the gig, of which he was coxswain, and now the last member of that boatload has passed "across the bar."

Mr. Thorn had a distinct recollection up to the time of his death of the ceremony of proclaiming the colony. He was chainman of the party who first surveyed the city, but was during the first four months engaged in taking soundings in the gulf. After that, in 1840, he assisted in droving a mob of cattle and sheep from Sydney to Adelaide, and had an exciting time with the natives.

Mr. Thorn always highly esteemed his chief, and when Colonel Light died he assisted to place him in his coffin.

Mr. Thorn died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. W. Cooper, at Knightsbridge. He has left six daughters, three of whom are married —Mrs. W. Cooper, Mrs. H. W. Uffindell, and two sons, Messrs. G. H. and John Thorn. (late of Hahndorf).
