Maria’s Story
Maria Gandy was born in 1811 in Hampshire, England, the eldest of 8 children. She worked as a seamstress until her mother’s death when she became housekeeper for her family. She was devoted to William Light & shared the many privations he endured as he sought to complete the immense task of selecting the site, then surveying Adelaide. Light had contracted tuberculosis in the early 1820s & Maria was his primary carer as he struggled to complete the task undertaken for the Colonisation Commissioners.
In January 1839 Light & Maria were living in temporary accommodation, waiting for completion of a new cottage, when the temporary premises burnt down, destroying nearly all of the papers, journals & sketches he had accumulated during his lifetime. They moved to their new cottage on the banks of the Torrens River, which Light called ‘Theberton’, after Theberton Hall in Suffolk , England where he had been educated in the 1790s. The Adelaide suburb of Thebarton was named after their home, although the spelling changed due to a later typographical mistake.
Maria had been Light’s carer before they left England and she nursed him lovingly during the last months up to his death in October 1839. Shunned by Adelaide society during his lifetime, partly because of her unmarried status, Maria was the sole executrix & beneficiary of Light’s estate. She became the custodian of some of the most significant papers in the history of South Australia, now in the State Library.
After Light’s death, Maria married Dr George Mayo & they lived for some time in ‘Therberton’ cottage. The Mayo’s had 4 children – Mary Jane (1841 - 1934), Kate (1843 - 1934), George (1845 - 1921), and Maria (Feb 1847 – Nov 1847).
In December 1847, aged only 36 years, Maria also died of tuberculosis & was buried in an unmarked grave in West Terrace Cemetery. Light’s cottage was demolished in 1926.
Maria Gandy was honoured in her bicentennial year & the 175th anniversary of the founding of South Australia with a memorial unveiled in 2011, on the corner of Albert & Maria Streets, Thebarton.
