GEORGE ALLEN. 1814 -1899

  • 1814 Born November 1st.

  • 1827 Apprenticed to James Ratcliff, Deal, as a boatbuilder.

  • 1836 Left England on April 21 st.on the brig "Emma", Capt. John Nelson.

  • Arrived Kangaroo Island October 6th. Helped build the first houses there.

  • The island was a whaling center & he also became involved in building and repairing whaleboats.

  • Discharged in November & joined crew of the ship "Solway".

  • Shipwrecked in Endeavour Bay, December 18th

  • Sailed to Hobart on vessel "Sarah and Elizabeth".

  • Arrived Hobart and worked as a boatbuilder.

  • 1838 Sailed to Sydney on vessel "Henry", Capt. Bunney.

  • Joined vessel "Orontes", Captain Short, as carpenter

  • Sailed September 17th for Port Essington, NT carrying supplies for the newly established settlement.

  • Arrived Port Essington October 26th. having sailed via the Torres Strait.

  • Ship discharged cargo and set sail but was wrecked on a reef.. Run ashore.

  • 1839 Crew arrived at Port Essington January 1 st. as shipwrecked sailors.

  • Repaired a number of small boats and sailed back to Sydney.

  • Arrived Sydney July ..

  • Joined the brig "Adelaide" and sailed to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

  • Loaded cargo of kauri logs to be used for building developments in Adelaide.

  • Arrived Adelaide December and spent Christmas there.

  • 1840 Sailed for Launceston and commenced loading cargo for London

  • Sailed about March 24th and was very nearly shipwrecked as they sailed down the Tamar. Eventually sailed on April 1st. heading westwards across the Indian Ocean. Strong westerly gales forced the ship to turn and go east round Cape Hom on June 25th and headed for Rio de Janeiro.

  • Arrived in the English Channel September 1st.; Made fast in the London Docks September 3rd .

  • Married Jane Elizabeth PAUL November 10th. In St. Leonard's, Deal, Kent.

  • 1841 Sailed for New Zealand, departing London, Gravesend on February 1st. in the "Catherine Stewart Forbes".

  • Arrived Port Nicholson (Wellington) June 24th., 1841.

  • 1861-5 Member of the Wellington Provincial Council.

  • 1866 Retired from his trade of boatbuilding and purchased a farm at Waiwhetu.

  • 1876-1883 Member of Wellington City Council. Lord Mayor for very short period 1879

  • 1887-1888 Served on the Charitable Aid Board; trustee & treasurer of the Wellington Hospital. Had a ward named after him.

  • Managing Director & subsequently Chairman of the Wellington Trust, Loan And Investment Company

  • 1899 Died May 10th. Leaving 4 sons, S daughters and many grandchildren.
