We pre-service teachers our aiming to implement DEPED mandate which is to make every pupils a proficient readers. Recognizing that there are still many Filipino learners that are struggling to meet the learning standards in early language, literacy, and numeracy, the Department of Education (DepEd) has strongly encouraged all elementary and secondary public schools to intensify their advocacy particularly for reading. In an effort to strengthen the reading proficiency of every learner and help nurture a culture of reading which considered a requisite skill in all content areas, DepEd announced the Hamon: Bawat Bata Bumasa (3Bs) initiative.
We aims to address the needs of the struggling readers and to provide them enrichment activities to further enhance their reading skills particularly their reading comprehension. The reading project will also serve as an avenue to ensure that every child is a proficient and independent reader in their grade level.
The action research plan we aim is anchored in the target of the Department of Education to intensify the reading activities in the school to achieve quality education.
Educate the parents on how to be a reading teacher at home;
Provide reading materials that can be used by struggling, frustration, instructional, and independent readers.
Improve the academic performance of the learners who are struggling in reading and comprehension.
· Series of Orientation to teach the parents on how to teach reading at home.
a. Orientation 1: The Role of Parents in Reading Development and Importance of Reading at Home
b. Orientation 2: Implementation of after school- reading Program-(at least 1-2 hours reading after answering/doing the learning tasks in the modules.
· Provision of reading materials to parents suitable to the needs of the learners, materials are compiled through the help of Key teachers and reading coordinators.
· Conduct assessment to gauge the improvement of the learners reading skills.
The most appropriate adjective to sum up how we felt about this activity in general is "fulfilled." Lots of challenges in communication, misunderstanding and struggles while we are working this, but despite of all challenges, we accomplish this activity with fulfillment to our faces also to our heart to work what is worth for the learners, we hope we can help the learners bring back their excitement to drive their study well and achieve their academic goals, as we face our situation of pandemic, we will fulfill our dreams in life.
